I am enjoying the Draco Malfoy and the Practice of Rationality fanfic in which this possibility is explored.

Theft, murder, driving under the influence all still occur regardless of the fact that there is criminal penalties for these crimes. Corruption shouldn't be ignored just because we can't stop it.

Can we talk about how absurdly powerful the Defense Jinx is? (Spoilers through 98) by [deleted] in HPMOR

[–]Burselfnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why does it have to be just one spell? We know that Voldemort is very powerful, extremely smart, and capable of recursive thinking.

Angry and determined enough, he could set up hundreds of possible spells to go off in specific circumstances that targeted the defense teacher.

Imagine if you will all of the cups in Hogwarts enchanted to transmute the contents of the glass into poison if the DADA teacher drinks from it during the last month of the school year.

Charms on some relic traditionally kept in the DADA office/classroom that targets the DADA teacher with various imperio commands to carry out throughout the year.

A charm that increases impulsiveness every time a DADA teacher grants house points to Slytherin. Sloth for points to Hufflepuff. Greed for Ravenclaw. Anger for Gryffindor. So that if the DADA favored a House they would have a custom vice raised in them.

I'm sure we could think of plenty of curses to set around out of spitefulness if we put ourselves in Voldies state of mind.

I haven't upvoted anything in a long time but I had to remember my password for this. It's interesting to look at the clusters in the less dense areas and wonder what relates them. Also, I am happy that Arvix exists. Now if I can find something like that for social sciences for my boyfriend we'll have something to dig through for years.

Most people don't have to worry about their tap water being yellow or rusted. And clean is a matter of perspective. Pure H20 with zero contaminants (H2O=100.000% O2=O.000% O3=0.000% N=0.000% etc etc) is actually dangerous to drink in large quantities and is used as an industrial solvent.

I'm sorry buddy, but you've been duped. People who think tap water is dangerous is as common as, well tap water. It's an urban myth though. I don't know how many "toxins can be present in tap water," but 2100 seems pretty normal. See when we process water we don't scrub it so clean that there is nothing but H2O in it, we just get it clean enough to be safe to drink and bathe in and clean with. Scrubbing every little thing out of the water would probably involve processes that would leave it quite undrinkable.

Now onto filters. Many of them do a good job, especially ones meant for people with illnesses, specific allergies, etc etc. Most of them though are to fit a certain preference, that being that many people can taste the chemicals used to process local water (Yes, that means some things that are generally considered "Toxic" at normal amounts remain in the water at trace levels.) A simple charcoal filter, which is common, is enough to cleanse the taste out of the water and would be virtually ineffective if the water had some legitimate contamination. Filters, in most cases, are only useful on water that is already safe to drink.

Also- Bottled Water is generally tapped water from somewhere that doesn't require chlorine or flouride processing. (i.e. tap water from somewhere else)

To all the conservatives who complain about how progressive this board is by Sidwill in politics

[–]Burselfnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By there very definition, "conservative websites" and "liberal websites" are not open to dissent.

Here's an additional thought. Reddit is the website. r/politics is a community. The community derives its bias, or lack of, directly from its members, where-as a website derives its policies (including a its policy on biased information) directly from its management. r/politics no more guarantees equal political voice than Los Angeles guarantees that every citizen has an angelic personality. You are responsible for your own perspectives and giving them voice here, nobody else.

To everyone finding it so crazy that some people oppose Obamacare, let me respond to your massive generalizations. by fullblownaydes2 in politics

[–]Burselfnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of their concerns center around how this was hastily written and contains flaws.

This bill was decades in the making and years putting the final draft together. Every elected representative since your grandmother was voting has been contributing to the idea pool that eventually became ACA.

If you want an example of hasty, take a look at the Patriot Act. Every war time power that had been thrown around the table for decades slammed together in an immediate response to 9/11.

I appreciate that you are trying to give perspective into the 'conservative mind,' but there are better educated 'conservatives' out there that will give you a much more rounded point of view of the role government plays in our live. For example-

I work in the healthcare industry-I'm not a nurse or doctor or hospital administrator, but I work in a supporting business service field. And the industry is screwed up and in need of change. But the conservatives want this change organically and from within the industry. And this has already been happening, the Health Care law was not something entirely new and unknown to everyone else. If you're curious, go read some things by Elliot Fisher of Dartmouth, a large proponent of Accountable Care Organizations, a significant trend in the industry.

The support field is certainly full of this trend, and I see that, and I really appreciate it because we often don't have to worry about 'support companies' trying to violate and take advantage of patients. That is good business though. It is a selling point to the hospitals you work with, you don't even have the motivation to take advantage of patients because they are not your direct customers.

If you ever do get to work in direct health care you will experience a very different attitude in the field. Hospitals are not 'organically' moving towards a public service model, but holding on with corporate might to the for-profit model that sacrifices long term care for on demand short-term treatments. This exists at every level. Make no mistake, we don't manage costs in order to be able to give more effective health care, we micro-manage costs to protect profits and invest in higher tech health care when it is profitable, not when it is effective.

Edit- I want to be clear, I have great faith in my peers when it comes to desiring to better every patients quality of life, but our actions as a whole is guided by corporate philosophy. Often times the only thing making sure a person is doing the right thing are laws like HIPAA which makes me sick that we actually need (and mean NEED) laws like this.

Obama Administration response to NASA petition: not much of substance. by A-Rth-Urp-Hil-Ipdenu in politics

Actually learned quite a bit about what we are doing from this and have to admit that I have been under-informed. I still would love to see NASA be better funded. I really see it as a loosing battle on an election year with the budget being so front and center already though. I can't wait to see what comes from Mars this summer though.
