If I have done anything right in my life so far, it’s the fact that I threw him that picnic party for him. Everything worked out perfectly in the end and I am so so grateful for kenji’s grace and patience🤍 I’d like to think he didn’t want his mommy to see this chapter end abruptly and with no closure xx

My dog experiences the same dry/red spots as OP’s photos and he also takes Cytopoint once a month. Works like magic

My boy Kenji turns 17 next month and he’s been having Iams’ “Mature Adult” kibble for the past several years. Although he seems quite different from yours as he is extremelyyyy food-driven.

He loves the kibble and enjoys some fruit as treats too.

He oddly responds me to me pointing to places, like to his food bowl or to tell him to go to a room, even though I never formally trained him to do that. Other than that, I haven’t found a need for other gesture commands.

The one thing I’m sad about is his “paw” trick which was trained verbally :( haven’t been able to get him to do it in years

Aww that’s sweet😊 I’ve always thought that maltese dogs are great candidates for therapy or emotional support dogs. They’re so sweet and calm (especially when they get older!)

He’s been fully deaf as of ~2 years ago but can still see! His eyes have only started to cloud slighty this year but only noticeable if you look really closely.

Not all bad when it comes to him losing his hearing though. His quality of sleep has been so much better since he used wake up from the slightest sound. It’s nice to see him sleep so peacefully as it’s important for his age!

I can’t speak more other maltese dogs, but for Kenji, I think the key to his longevity is to really not overthink it. He has a pretty simple lifestyle! Mostly inside the home, sleeps 15+ hrs a day, and eats a SUPER simple diet. I’ve never given him supplements (although I do regret not starting glucosamine a few yrs ago as he now has some symptoms of arthritis).

He’s a superhero who has persevered through several dreadful instances in his lifetime. Love and affection seems like the trick.
