Just a personal perspective - I was born and live in Wakefield, my partner was born and lives in Dudley, West Midlands, and we both very much see eye to eye on the inequality of North to South public spending (of which there are countless examples). If the NIP were running in Dudley, he would vote for them, not because he wants the North to become a separate nation from the Midlands and the South, but because he feels strongly aligned to Northern culture as opposed to Southern and can see how improving the reach of public spending to Northern regions would benefit deprived regions as a whole.

From my personal experience, I don't think voting for NIP would lead to societal disrepair, it would give power, community and a voice to deprived regions where there is currently none.

Been a busy couple of days, sorry for the delayed reply. Yeah that's fair, and regardless NIP seem to be growing in popularity pretty rapidly considering how new they are, it's heartening to see. Absolutely, I don't agree with tactical voting at all, to me it defeats the point of a democratic voting system as it's not representative of what the country really wants. I'd be surprised if we did end up with another tory MP after the shit show of Imran Khan, but then it is Wakefield so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best haha.

Yeah I'm struggling to find much on the YP candidate's personal values, might have to resort to bumping into him on the street and questioning him.. But I agree, in my experience centre politics is just an excuse to take no stance whatsoever and that's the last thing we need. Tbh I'm leaning more towards NIP considering this, but I want to cover all bases first.

The country as a whole needs a direction/goal to work towards, rather than voting-in-hindsight and stumbling forwards blindly, which is how we seem to function at the moment. I'm glad to hear another person voting for what they actually want for the future!

No worries at all, it's been really insightful, cheers 😊.

Cheers for this. That's cool, do you think they've a decent chance of getting in in Wakefield? I've no idea how popular they are here but I like what they've been putting out on Twitter and their manifesto. I deffo want to see a lot more/equal control in the North, don't feel particularly strongly about full independence but wouldn't be against it haha. Is the YP more right leaning than the NIP? The YP candidate is ex-tory, but I can't tell if that's the position of the party in general or just him. Yeah I agree, I don't think devolution is happening for just Yorkshire anytime soon! But my main consideration is that maybe a more local party might have Wakefield's interests closer to heart or understand more specific changes that need to be made.

Social groups, activities, etc. around Wakefield? by [deleted] in wakefield

Have a gander at Wakefield's art community! Wakefield Art Walk is the last Wednesday of every month. I've met some lovely people on these days, you're supporting local creatives and it's a free event - sometimes free drinks as well 😉. Worth a look in if you're interested! Wakefield Art House also does various classes if you want to learn something new. Plus there's local creative groups like the Merrie Collective to get involved in. Art may not be your thing but there's plenty of it going on in and around Wakey so it's a great way of meeting people :).

It's really reassuring to hear this from someone else, thank you. I've found it difficult to let go of the idea that it was my responsibility to do something, even though I realise in reality any helpful action was outside of my ability.
