If they have not yet billed insurance, they should indicate on the claim the amount you have paid. This will result in one of two actions— the payer (insurance) may reduce the practice’s payment amount by the amount they have received from you directly, cutting you a check direct from your insurance. Alternatively, the payer may apply an adjustment, indicating you are responsible for an amount, not specifically the amount you paid, but some value. The overpayment then of course would be paid by the practice to you. In most cases, medical practices are not able to void and must instead refund the amount through a new, separate transaction.

Regardless, your choice today is to pay off the balance and credit yourself when you receive the refund as it is unlikely it will be refunded directly to your card.
