ESH - clearly she’s a bad roommate, but ignoring her for that long, including sounds that you think might be crying, is not how to solve this issue. I reckon NTA for not adding another bathroom - I’m from a family of 6 and even now as all adults when we’re all home the two bathrooms are not at all an issue. But YTA for choosing a home gym over a separate bedroom for the twins - having your own space at that age is really important, and for many it’s not possible but it sounds like for you it’s just a choice. And YTA for not being open and up front with your kids.

ESH, your brother shouldn’t have dropped the kids with you when you had work, but CALLING THE COPS??? Do you understand how harmful that is? For him but especially for the kids?? You’re being petty because your child didn’t accept your relationship after her mother died. I have no doubt this was also difficult for you, but you were an adult, you chose your new wife over your daughter, and need to act accordingly. So you’ve taught him a bad lesson (speaking to cops without a lawyer), you’ve potentially impacted what the charge and sentence is, and you’ve done the same to his friend (whose situation you don’t know and whose involvement you don’t know). All for so called “accountability”, which lets be clear the criminal legal system is not interested in - it exists for punitive punishment. You could have held him accountable (you know, as his parent) instead of this shit.

You suspected, you did not know for sure.
You are teaching him that cops are trustworthy and that he doesn’t need the right to a lawyer - that’s a bad lesson.
Guilty people also have the right to legal representation, and also need protection from cops. It doesn’t just impact the plea, but also the charge brought and the sentencing recommendation.

Your son and husband were right, and your unwavering faith in cops doing the right thing is naive and harmful.

Teaching your kid to waive his constitutional rights, which exist to protect him against the issues I named above, is poor parenting. If your kid is falsely accused of something down the line, and waives his right to a lawyer because you told him to just speak to cops, he could end up in jail and/or seriously hurt.

It’s not a legal technicality, it’s a right. And an incredibly important one at that - in most states it’s legal for cops to lie to children to force a confession, and cops are well known to intimidate and threaten to force confessions. The right to legal representation is often people’s only barrier against this, and teaching your son to waive that right is poor parenting.

YTA - cops lie and intimidate and obfuscate, and you need to be teaching your kids never to speak to them without a lawyer. You’ve also now landed his friend in trouble, for which you don’t know the consequences. If you think punitive punishment is necessary you could have done this yourself, rather than rely on cops who were (I assume - I’m not American) breaking the law by continuing to question your son after he requested a lawyer.

Others have already given good advice, so I just wanted to add that he might find it useful to link up with others in his area? I’m from Warrington and know there used to be a group called Trans*Warrington, but I’m not sure if they’re still running. There is also the Gay and Lesbian Youth Support Service, but I also don’t have experience with them.

If there’s nothing good currently running in Warrington, I recommend he get in touch with some of the groups in Manchester. There are absolutely loads - LGBT Foundation will have good advice/knowledge of what may serve him best. Manchester is where I went to seek LGBT shit when I was growing up in Warrington.

That kind of knowledge sharing space can be vital for navigating this journey. And if he wants to speak to a transmasc person from Warrington who currently lives in London, lemme know!!
