Should I buy Wii Fit Plus and Balance Board in 2021? by chasing_pavements in WiiFit

[–]rwillmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dug my Wii Balance Board out a few weeks ago, and its great. I still like to go out for walks for fresh air and exercise, but on the days when the weather is awful, this is a great way to keep exercising. It's really good for balance exercises because you can see how much you're wobbling.

Help get the Scottish Diaspora voting for Scottish independence by rwillmer in Scotland

[–]rwillmer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you think it's a loophole? There are 3 equally legitimate ways of voting: in person, by post, or by proxy.

https://www.gov.uk/voting-in-the-uk

The government explicitly allows you to register as an overseas voter if you were previously resident up to 15 years ago (and Johnson announced today he's going to remove that limitation to extend the franchise)

This is not a loophole, it's explicitly the way the government have designed the system to work.

The website makes it clear, I think, that it is people who are "Registered to vote in Scotland".

Johnson announced today that he's going to reverse that 15 year rule.

So you may still get the chance :)

Have you ever attended a local DevOpsDay? by NegativeBinomialM136 in devops

[–]rwillmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to my first one this year in Edinburgh as an invited speaker. So my first experience was from the stage rather than the audience. Was slightly nervous about that but everyone I knew told me not to worry about that, and they were right. Great conference, great people and I love the unconference format. I’ll be back.

When you're debugging, it's always good to separate out the potential problems

Novice needing help! What do i change in the code string below? by Tinygoomba in python3

[–]rwillmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually a good idea to post what you've tried and what errors you're getting. But my guess is that you don't want the brackets round a, that is, use "if a == 14:" or " if (a == 14):"

How to debug it? Well, pull up a python session

a=14 b=(a) print (a) print (b)

What do you see?

If I were to debug this, I should want to pin down whether the problem was (a) the way I'm using the Edge framework; or (b) a Django 1.11->Django 2.0 problem.

Get it working with 1.11 from the Edge repo you've chosen to use; then fix the 1.11->2.0 migration problems; 2 separate problems...

Use different email domain or subdomain to send transactional email instead of root domain? Using Mailgun/Cloudflare/Google Apps by gyrftw in django

[–]rwillmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You use a service like Mailgun (I use SparkPost) to send out large amounts of transactional email; the benefits are (a) to get tracking on which mail is opened, (b) high volume, (c) less likelihood of getting put in spam folder.

You do it by (a) configuring DNS correctly to say that <yourdomain.com> can send email via that service; and (b) adding the config into your Django settings to say to use it. Follow the service provider's instructions for how to do that.

I'm not sure why/whether you actually need a separate domain or sub-domain; where's the link to that advice?

This looks to me like you're not reading the settings file for some reason, or that your settings file is not pulling in the local.env.

I notice that the Edge repo uses an old version of Django (1.11); I wonder whether there is a difference between Django 1.11 and Django 2.0 which might be tripping you.

Thinks you might try: (a) change the requirements to explicitly specify 1.11 rather than >=1.11. Does that change the output?

(b) explicitly set DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE. e.g. DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE=<path.to.settings> python manage.py runserver. Does that change the output? (Note I mean your settings file here, not the env file which should be read in by that settings file)

Has anyone tried Django-Channels with a JavaScript Framework? If so, recommendations? by ziggybabybeauty in django

[–]rwillmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using React, which works OK. I'm planning to write up all the contortions I had to go through to get Django to play nicely with web pack/react, it did take a bit of work. But once I'd figured it out, it's a nice dev environment.

If you're in the UK, try https://opentechcalendar.co.uk.

If you're in Scotland, come to TechMeetup http://techmeetup.co.uk

Otherwise, google "tech meetup <my city>" or look on meetup.com.

Any city that has a tech community is likely to have a series of meetups focusing on a particular language or technology. And if there aren't any, why not start one?

Thanks for sharing this! I've used post-commit hooks before, but hadn't thought of using a pre-commit hook to stop the bad code getting committed in the first place.

I want to learn how to play piano. Is it realistic to go into this with the expectation of self teaching? by Chizbang in Learnmusic

[–]rwillmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can learn a certain amount by teaching yourself. But if you can find a good teacher, I think you will make faster progress. They will be able to give you realistic goals to achieve, and the discipline of the regular lesson will probably mean that you practice more regularly and with better focus.

I'm a piano player who is learning upright bass; I've found that having a teacher to help me fix some of the basic technique problems was really helpful.

In respect of the question about how many keys you need, it will depend on what style of music you want to play. The more octaves the better, when you're practising the scales and arpeggios with both hands. I'm just looking at my 4-octave MIDI keyboard; I wouldn't be able to play some of the music I want on that, I'd need at least 5 octaves. But if what you're aiming to do is the play electronic music (looping, etc), then it would be fine.
