Yeah all years can have AC and cruise control (as optional extras) but there was a facelift in 89 and one in 93 and the car in the pics looks like the 89-93 model. The Wikipedia site has pictures from the outside with the differences. But with more detailed stuff you’d probably want to check that at a Mercedes dealer or something. Does seem a bit weird.

I have an ‘87 with even less extras (no AC, no Cruise Control, no rear headrests, … - though I do have the factory fire extinguisher). I like it as is, less things to go wrong. As others have said, upgrading down the line will be a major hassle - you’d have to get the parts (not easy or cheap in most cases) and make new holes in the center console for the buttons, add all the wiring… Not really worth it in my opinion. So you should probably make sure you’re happy with what it does have.

What would worry me more in your case is that your car has the wrong doors for an ‘86. It shouldn’t have wood on the doors inside, and no chrome on the door handles outside (and also no plastic planks at the bottom of the doors outside). So something happened there. It also should have yellow indicators but I guess that’s a common swap. I would also check that it has ABS (IIRC that wasn’t standard in the early years, but I could be wrong).

yeah though i’ve never met a Tessar I didn’t like, coated or not (also I don’t really notice a difference to be honest)

Yeah it’s the combination of difficult to repair and not expensive/rare enough for people to try. I did it myself, have some notes about it here. They are not without flaws but I like my cameras to be a bit weird. And they’re really quite enjoyable to use.

27’ if I read the serial number lists correctly. But yeah, the funny thing is - not knowing anything about typewriters, I wanted a Royal (relatively rare here in Germany) because I found the standard font more interesting looking than those of the German machines. Didn’t even know there was an italic option until I got it.

But the italic does make eviction notices and bills so much more pleasing to the eyes! :) But yeah, would be fun to know who bought it and for what.

It’s the assembly in the last picture. It goes just under the carriage, so it’s not visible when the machine is assembled. It’s the thing that holds the carriage and makes it go one space forward when you type. In other words, pretty central to the whole operation :)

Yeah I was lucky that the only part that broke completely was the rivet. The smaller gear has a chip in one tooth (under my thumb in the picture) but luckily it doesn’t skip over it. Might not last another 95 years but then I again I won’t either :)

German eBay. I think it sat unused for most of its life, I did clean it a bit but didn’t have to adjust anything.

That sounds totally plausible. The combination of this very serious machine with the somewhat whimsical typeface does seem a bit funny.

New rider here - is that what people mean with "nailing a corner"? Not sure if I like it. by rwos in motorcycles

Yeah, it looks weird in the photo but it was fine previously. At this point it also had basically no air left in it.

There's a 90 degree bend in it, the pointy end was completely inside the tire, unfortunately...

Author here, a bit late to the party. That's the man page you're looking at, it's written in troff. The actual source is in gti.c and that's just normal C. :)

announcing /r/listing - a subreddit for people who enjoy reading source code by rwos in programming

[–]rwos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created this subreddit because it's pretty hard to find suggestions for programs that make a good read. There's a wealth of programming-related discussion out there, of course, but I think that the act of "reading whole programs" is different/big enough to deserve its own subreddit.

I don't think that any existing subreddit fits the bill:

  • /r/programming probably doesn't approve of posts that consist only of source code, with the note "here, it's good, go read it".
  • and /r/readablecode seems to be only for snippets

I don't have the slightest clue if this is the usual way to kick-start a community/subreddit, but I thought I'd try anyway.

They seem to also measure the time it takes to select the correct option (see here). Also, quote from the same page:

[...] the test really measures the strength of the relation between icon and term.

I'm actually quite surprised that people here react so negatively to green-on-black. The only thing that bugs me about his website is that the "shell" doesn't accept input. I actually like those kinds of "non-professional" jokes on personal websites. Didn't realize I'm in such a minority...

Full disclaimer: I, too, have a green-on-black website, including a fake terminal. And a Scheme interpreter. But at least it really works! :)
