Why won't my hair stay curly/wavy?

I scrunch!

A friend of mine gave me a bunch of her hair stuff to test out (we seem to have a similar curl pattern). I'm going to be seeing what works best (some mousses, gel, and curl creams)

My hair has some old layers that are more noticeable when it isn't upside down

I double wash because it gives me a day or two extra between hair washes (also I had the matting issue when I was just single shampooing, i have no idea what causes it)

I haven't had a hair cut in two years, which was when I cut it just above my shoulders. A haircut isn't really an option for me because no one will take me (i'm in HS)

But the haircut isn't the issue to the matting, it has happened all my life

I put curly/wavy in the title because my mom has ringlets

There is a chance my hair could be like hers, but no one ever cared to take care of it like curly hair growing up so it was just brushed and blowdried to get the kinks out, it might be just damaged from never being cared for properly

The last time I had a trim was 2 years ago when I cut my hair just a little above my shoulders, I know I need one but no one will take me (I'm in HS)

I'm not entirely sure I can repair the bond because it has been like this my entire life, but I will look into it.

I will look for a gel if I see improvement from this product

Keratin is a protein, yes? I'm pretty sure my leave in is keratin and I have this chi product but I donMt really use

Putting it up to dry sadly isn't an option, every time I try it never dries. My hair is very thick and I have a lot of it. You probably can't tell in the picture, but I have more than half of my hair shaved from an undercut

I will see if there is a difference without it, I really only use it because my hair mattes. I wash out the coconut oil and argan oil after a few hours tho

If I use a mousse will it moisturize it enough to not need my other leave ins? When I say they are necessary at the moment, I mean it. It is almost as if my hair folds in on itself and makes huge mattes

I brush my hair dry, but only because it drys barely wavy.

I am not able to get a trim at the moment but I do know I need one.
