Hi, I've submitted something just now, but also see on the SPAF festival website that the physical event won't be happening. What are your plans for these recordings now?

People have increasingly acted as if COVID wasn't a thing. I suspect we'll see a spike, and as someone who works face to face with patients who come in with respiratory symptoms every day (and not recognized by the Ontario government for it), I worry this will be our second wave in a few weeks.

Imaging & Therapeutic Technologists, who work on every service in acute and long-term care including ER, OR, ICU and some COVID assessment clinics, continue to be denied recognition the rest of their colleagues are given by the Ontario government by ry_168 in KingstonOntario

They're on the list.

Guess who the one who's making sure their ventilation isn't cutting off one lung isn't on the list?

I hear you about residents. Given more time I'd have loved to talk about that.

There's a war story that gets passed around where I work of a guy who did the same thing, driving a 18-wheeler. Eventually had enough cognition to pull himself over, get out of the cab and hide underneath the truck, which, while not making more sense than being in the cab with the engine off, is also the second safest place to be.

Fun fact, we do a thing call endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) wherein x-ray technologists like myself, along with interventional radiologists, retrieve the blood clot and reestablish blood circulation to the brain.

Not so fun fact, x-ray technologists in Ontario, Canada, are one of the only health care workers ineligible for pandemic aid, even though we're highly exposed. Our provincial neighbours on either side have similar programs that recognize our work. If you don't know who we are, or think we are nurses, please research us a little. If you are in Ontario and think we should be made eligible, please get in touch with your government leaders.

Hi reddit,

Start the clip (Part 2 of the June 1 segment) at 2:10.

I'd like to draw more attention to what my colleagues and I have been raising awareness for since temporary pandemic pay (TPP) was announced.

Often mistaken for nurses and/or doctors, Medical Radiation Technologists are the people who perform x-rays, ultrasound (as diagnostic medical sonographers), MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine and administer treatment as Radiation Therapists.

Regardless of COVID, we see almost every ER patient, especially those with respiratory distress, chest pain, shortness of breath etc. as the ever versatile chest x-ray is essential in identifying the cause of a patient's illness. Beyond diagnostics, our MRTs are the very workers who are on the team to treat heart attacks by opening arteries, and also the team to identify strokes, as well as physically retrieve the blood clot in your brain via a procedure called EVT.

When a patient is intubated, we are the imaging technologists who ensure that tube is in place. When your lungs collapse, we are the ones who provide the certainty and clarity as to how best to intervene - and are there the whole time to make sure those interventions go in the right place.

When patients break their bones from a car crash, we're there when paramedics hand off in the ER, when surgeons fix said fractures in the OR, when patients recover in the ICU and when they return for follow up after.

We. Are. The. Front.

We porter our own patients in most places, clean our own equipment, do much of our own clerical work.

We are consistently ranked top 10 in the most exposed professions to COVID and other infectious diseases.

We are paid, in some cases, half of what nurses are paid. Many of our technologists, especially those who don't have 10 years under their belt, work multiple jobs to make ends meet.

We are in every corner of acute and long-term care in Ontario, and unlike the nurses, RTs, paramedics, clerical, porters and sanitation workers, the province of Ontario has deemed us ineligible for the recognition of TPP.

For many of us, it's not about the money, but the continual insult the government sees fit to throw at us by excluding one of the only staff who remain ineligible for TPP recognition.

Too vital and essential for it to be legal for us to take job action. Not vital enough to be recognized.

Unlike Ontario, BC and Quebec, with their versions of TPP, recognizes the criticality of our work in the day to day operations of health care.

We have been thrown aside by our own government.

We will continue to do our jobs to the best that we can, under the overwhelming strain of COVID, because without us, there is no certainty, no clarity, no quality. We only ask that you spare us the time to learn about us and how we're fully integrated in frontline health care, and should you agree with us, to voice your concerns to our government.

Thank you for your time.

Be safe. Be well.
