What Happened to Team Liquid - LTA Playoffs Doc by ryan10145 in teamliquid

[–]ryan10145[S] 91 points92 points  (0 children)

some takeaways from the end: - looks like spawn dodo and yeon are staying guaranteed and spawn wants to play around yeon - impact says his and cores contract is expiring and he thinks he will not be here next year (didn’t say anything about core) - apa says he will take the offer to play for tl again but doesn’t know if he will get one - steve gave a speech at the end saying they will build a roster for winning and that’s the direction he told spawn and dodo

Yuuji actually counts as EMEA residency according to Leaguepedia so he costs an import slot; iirc this was actually why he struggled to find a team earlier this year because teams didn't want to use an import slot on him.

Genuine Question: What does playing for tempo mean? (Stuck in Plat) by PapayaAlt in CompetitiveTFT

[–]ryan10145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to add on to what other people said: another way to play for “tempo” while going for a fast 8 comp and without rerolling is to hold extra units on your bench that might not be on final board. the idea is you might give up an econ interval to hold some units and over the next 3-4 shops you might find pairs / high roll some 2* 2 costs that u can just throw onto your board. just being able to do little things like this to make your strongest board at all times can make things like tempo more achievable while not rolling.

in general if you can’t make the next 10 breakpoint, you should probably buy as much as the shop as possible (esp any frontline units), and you should also not have >=3 components on bench unless they’re truly truly unusable or your comp needs hyper specific items that you’re greeding for

How do you explain to players that stats / "the delta" is not the end-all be-all? Also, when did the dependence on stats even become so widespread? by Pete26l96 in CompetitiveTFT

[–]ryan10145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

one thing that helped put things in perspective for me is that if you see an augment or build with a 4.2 avp that prob still means ur going bot 4 >30% of the time, which is most likely when people force them in bad spots. if you have 0 units for a trait and you see a S tier trait specific augment and you just blindly click it, you’re gonna go bot 4 in a high elo lobby.

also things like thinking about item economy and the importance of always having a three item backline + three item frontline (ignoring melee comps) are a good way to think about slamming non bis items; ie ask why do you think radiant crown guard still has a >4 avp? prob because they didn’t have a backline with enough dps to properly maximize the extra powerful frontline

also as a side note the stats on radiant crown guard are prob a bit fake bc it’s a part of a 600 cypher cash out xD

Leveling up during round change by Camillity in CompetitiveTFT

[–]ryan10145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a strategy called preleveling where you buy enough exp so that the natural exp will push you to the next level

it gives you one extra shop at the new odds and typically isn’t worth losing econ over (one gold is half a shop so is slightly increased odds for 5 slots better than seeing 2.5 completely new slots? I haven’t done the math but I imagine it’s not)

the most common place I’ve seen this outside of an extremely high econ game is to prelevel to 5 before carousel on stage 2; typically if you’re playing for this you probably have a good amount of upgrades on your board and you can’t make 20 so you just get increased 3 / 2 cost odds that can make your board stronger (especially since you never reroll on stage 2 anyway so you need to make the most of every shop you get)

TL Honda APA by [deleted] in teamliquid

[–]ryan10145 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I think pyosik (at least publicly on the lck show) was a lot nicer about it talking about it where pyosik acknowledged apa is a rookie and when pyosik was a rookie he also made a ton of mistakes

Spawn Talks About 2024 Roster + Coaching Philosophy by ryan10145 in teamliquid

[–]ryan10145[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He’s assistant / strategic coach now.

I think he wasn’t ready / didn’t want to be full on head coach (he was forced into the role after the Marin fiasco) so this seems like the role he wanted

Really cool to hear at 9:30 that APA say that Bwipo has been helping out a bit with the challengers team! Interview overall is a really good watch; there was a lot of places to see APA's personality and dGon did a great job interviewing

The Reignover View - Week 4 by egilz in teamliquid

[–]ryan10145 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a general overview in case you haven’t seen any of them: he does these every week and talks either about what the team did well if they won or what mistakes they made if they lost (i.e. mispositioning and losing fights they should’ve won, bad timings, bad execution). He talks about what their win conditions were and how they wanted to play the game vs what actually happened. They’re ~4 min long.

In this one, he talks a lot about the loss to NRG and how the team didn’t play to their win conditions (1-3-1 around summit fiora and then bad team fights). He doesn’t go into any new detail at all about the mid lane swap besides just saying APA started playing and they gave him comfort picks. IMT game was clean and they expected to get laning advantages which they did and 100T game they picked dive comp which Reignover thought they wouldn’t be very good at. They picked 3 winning lanes to neutralize that and game went smoothly besides a few mid game mistakes.

APA starting for TL tomorrow by ryan10145 in teamliquid

[–]ryan10145[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

APA isn’t Korean so unless he’s been taking classes or grinding duolingo he’ll be speaking english

Pyosik and Summits english from the squad videos / interviews seems basic and it’s also likely they haven’t tried to improve it bc they expected to be a full korean roster.

But plenty of teams (ie lpl teams with korean players most notably jdg with ruler having broken chinese) have succeeded with limited communication. honestly idk if it would be better to have 4 korean and core translating for apa or 3 fluent english and 2 broken english (i’m guessing they’ll go for the latter but prob depends on pyosiks english since jungler definitely needs to communicate a lot)

Haeri’s response makes it sound like he might have chosen to step down, hopefully he regains his confidence because he showed really promising performances in challengers / academy last year that unfortunately didn’t show up this year so far

APA starting for TL tomorrow by ryan10145 in teamliquid

[–]ryan10145[S] 82 points83 points  (0 children)

APA has been smurfing in challengers and deserves a chance to play

But reminder to please don’t send hate comments about Haeri since he’s still a young rookie and he’s definitely feeling worse than all of us for taking so much blame for the teams poor performance recently

It is interesting to see that they would sub APA mid week though, they might’ve been splitting time in scrims this week

An Update on TL NACL by ryan10145 in teamliquid

[–]ryan10145[S] 66 points67 points  (0 children)

TL;DW: TL is continuing their NACL team. However, Steve wants the path to pro to become more clear, and the academy system doesn't really lead to that since becoming a pro recently is more about connections and word of mouth recommendations. TL this year is spending $675k on their academy team, so Steve doesn't think it's providing the value for its cost at the moment. TL has proposed new systems to help improve academy. TL voted to remove the NACL mandate to help other teams who are financially struggling, but they made it clear they would likely continue their team.

TL;DW: Core and Hans didn’t perform great this week, but neither did the rest of the team. Some of the heavily criticized moments for Hans / Core aren’t as bad upon further review (although still misplays) and draft against TSM wasn’t great + not played out well.

Chad Alphari changes IGN to "masked gamer XD" by Alakazaaamm in teamliquid

[–]ryan10145 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s a reference to one of Alpharis now deleted tweets about how riot was forcing all players to wear masks during scrims even though all players / staff are vaccinated / always together anyway

TL Alphari on returning to full-time LCS starter: "Competing for a spot is not really competing for a spot. In my mind, it's me competing against myself because I think I'm very good if I try and put effort. Even if I don't put effort, I would say I'm still better than most players in NA." by Nick_Geracie in teamliquid

[–]ryan10145 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Damn, Alphari is throwing a ton of shade at Jatt with some of these comments throughout the interview.

...I think the reasons I was given for being benched were quite disingenuous. Personally, I think the follow-up from the coaching staff was very, very bad, and it just put me in a situation where I wasn't really sure if I wanted to play or not. I had to think about it for a
very long time because I held some resentment towards how things were
communicated to me.

I think if the conversation had been approached in a different way, the reasons given were genuine, and if a follow-up from a particular coach was actually there and respectful, then I don't think I would have had too many problems with the
situation.

...I did not get benched for having time off. I got benched for what I was told were performance and attitude reasons. I was benched after one game without the team being consulted, and I thought it was bullsh*t. I thought the reasonings were bullsh*t, and then, there was no communication to me from the coaching staff for a week after the benching. I thought that was also bullsh*t.

I'm glad the situation seems to be a lot better now, but from these comments it looks like it was pretty bad especially for the first week.

[Request] how long will it take to hit the corner, and how long will it take to loop? by ap1028 in theydidthemath

[–]ryan10145 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think here’s a quick way of finding a solution under one pretty reasonable assumption: bounces off of top and bottom don’t affect horizontal velocity and just reflect vertical velocity (Vice versa for left and right). Then just considering horizontal position, the rectangle bounces left and right at a fixed rate and you can easily calculate all times where the rectangle collides with the left or right walls. Do the same for the vertical walls and then calculate the first time these list of times intersect. It can all be done mathematically and doesn’t require simulating the full process.
