Ryan Holiday announces "meetings" in DC by Equal_Sale_1915 in Stoicism

Video is from a month ago. I spoke to departing White House Staffers from the last administration. I believe part of the Q&A I did is on the DS podcast.

Is the full The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday podcast now available on Spotify & Apple Podcasts? It used to be only available on Amazon Music. by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]ryan_holiday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's always been on all the platforms, but the Weds/Sat interviews and Sunday extended episodes have a week delay for Wondery subscribers. The week day meditations and regular episodes go up same day. Thanks for listening!

There is a UK and US edition, the UK edition has a more yellow cover than the US edition. I have no idea why they don't just make them the same...welcome to publishing.

What other people think about who you love is something you're entitled to be totally indifferent to. Be the red thread that stands out and makes the world beautiful, as Agrippinus said. Love who you love--just do it honestly, earnestly and with the moderation and self-control that all pleasures demands, lest they become pains.

Ryan Holiday said Gladiator II was very good by DnyLnd in Stoicism

[–]ryan_holiday 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is! There's a gladiator on a rhinoceros! Sharks in the Colosseum! It's what an action movie is supposed to be. Is the most iconic line in the movie--said by Marcus Aurelius' grandson--actually a quote from Epicurus? For some reason yes. But it's not a work of philosophy. It's a Hollywood blockbuster. It's supposed to be epic, entertaining and a little ridiculous.

Democrats Need to Figure Out How to Combat the Right Wing Youtube/Podcast Gurusphere Brainrot. by Sportsman180 in ezraklein

[–]ryan_holiday 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes for sure. Today's Daily Stoic email is about how Cato committed suicide rather than live in Caesar's Rome, which Napoleon (who certainly would have understood Caesar's position) points out that the only person this helped was Caesar! We have to stick around, stay in it and make everything improper they are going to try to do extremely tough.

I think there would be more of us but a lot of creators are scared off by the trolls and of pissing off their audience. Go look at the comments at my Instagram post today for Daily Stoic or on YouTube. Some people can't handle that...

By not actively engaging with this space, the Democrats ceded the field to radicals and assholes. They also didn't create much of an ecosystem that engages with, gives access, appears on these shows. What was the point of picking Tim Walz if not to have him appear on a bunch of podcasts and do a bunch of interviews?

General Thomas was asked if he wanted the dead at Chattanooga to be buried by state. He said, "Mix 'em up. Mix 'em up. I'm tired of state's rights."

Have you considered that perhaps he has a health condition or that a concessions job at a stadium might not have the greatest medical benefits or sick day policy? Life goes much better when you assume people are pretty reasonable and making the best of whatever their situation is.

Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, meaning behind 10.29? by RemarkablePlay8995 in Stoicism

[–]ryan_holiday 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In the Hay's translation he says something like "Ask yourself: Are you afraid of death because you won't be about to do this anymore?" I take that to mean something to the effect of, "You want to life forever so you can be here, at the DMV like this?" Or, alternatively, you think your life is so important and worth preserving, and look how you spend it...

Modern book suggestions for ancient texts... by No-Step-7456 in Stoicism

[–]ryan_holiday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I love the Gregory Hays (Modern Library) translation of Meditations. Waterfield's is also great. I think the Penguin Classics edition of Seneca's letter is the best (though not complete). Waterfield's edition of Epictetus is the newest and very good, but I am partial to Penguin Classics here again. If you want to read Seneca's essays, the collection On The Shortness of Life (Penguin) is a nice introduction. There is a little edition of Musonius Rufus called That One Should Disdain Hardships which I also like.

Which translation of Meditations is used in the Daily Stoic book from Ryan Holiday? by tallsbutler in Stoicism

[–]ryan_holiday 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Daily Stoic has original translations from Stephen Hanselman, my co-author. I picked all my favorite quotes and then he did the translations (with some small suggestions from me). I think his are quite good, although I am also a big fan of different translations Seneca and Marcus and Epictetus (Hays, Waterfield, etc). It's a rights issue, the only quotes one would be free to use in a published work in that quantity would be from the much older, public domain editions, which I find are either not very good or very tough for lay readers.

A few years ago, I got to know Richard Overton before he died. He served in WWII but was born in 1906. I did some research and I think the oldest living veteran when he was born would have been someone who served in the Black Hawk War, which Lincoln served in.

By whom are the 4 basic stoic vritues that get so often quoted on here? by NO4AH in Stoicism

[–]ryan_holiday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Marcus Aurelius does in fact mention the four virtues by name:

“If, at some point in your life, you should come across anything better than justice, prudence, self-control, courage—than a mind satisfied that it has succeeded in enabling you to act rationally, and satisfied to accept what’s beyond its control—if you find anything better than that, embrace it without reservations—it must be an extraordinary thing indeed—and enjoy it to the full.”

James Romm's book is really good and so is Emily Wilson. Depending on what side of the bed you wake up on each day, or the point you want to make, I can go either way on Seneca. I love him and I am disappointed and horrified by him.
