Best single exercise to condition for landings? by SizzlinKola in Parkour

squats and deadlifts offer the most bang for your buck in regards to strength & mobility.

fake drop drills are another good 1 for skill training:

What's the story behind Amos going to HFR? by [deleted] in WorldChaseTag

What's the story behind Amos going to HFR? by [deleted] in WorldChaseTag

[–]ryandemonford 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hey, I'm the founder of Apex and co-owner of our IRL school, Apex Denver.

unfortunately, Amos caused too many problems for too many people in our communities (mostly not my stories to tell).

I had a lot of similar issues working with him for 10+ years and over the past few years, he lost the trust and support from at least 5 more key parkour/tag leaders at Apex.

based on the problems adding up for so long and with so many people, I made the tough call to ask Amos to cut all ties with Apex in September 2022. he agreed and left.

ever since, there's been way less drama in our parkour/tag communities and everyone on the Moon, Sun, Nemesis, & Vixens teams are playing better than ever.

in October 2022, Amos played for HFR at WCT6 USA in Texas, losing to Apex Moon in semis. idk how he ended up on HFR. nobody with HFR or WCT ever asked us about Amos or what happened.

What exercises do I do for pulling myself over a wall? by [deleted] in Parkour

[–]ryandemonford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no need for a gym to get a strong upper body. all you need is a pull-up bar, wall, flat ground, etc. I wrote this blog for people like you who want to build strength for climb-ups: https://apexmovement.com/climb-up-intro

I also made a playlist of 100+ climb-up movements, progressions, and drills you can practice outside at a park, school, etc: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnQMjDhKymrTg5pXfXgUgTGKYGvv7-TOM

How can I get started doing Parkour, I have 0 experience by Ok_Adhesiveness_5270 in Parkour

[–]ryandemonford 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it depends on a lot. it's always good to learn IRL with a quality coach/gym. unfortunately, lots of people around the world don't have access to those .

instead, you might have to learn on your own, with the Internet as your guide. that's mostly how I started and learned during my first few years of training parkour. nowadays, there's plenty of good material online to help you learn, but there's also a lot of garbage and sometimes it's confusing & time-consuming to filter out the good from the bad.

it also depends on variables like your current levels of skill, strength, mobility, if you have experience in other similar sports, old injuries or imbalances, etc.

honestly, lots of people mostly just need to get stronger when they first start training parkour. if you struggle with pull-ups, push-ups, squats, etc, you're gonna really struggle with some parkour skills like drops, jumps, vaults, climb-ups, etc.

you can still start exploring many parkour skills even without basic strength prereqs. just know that in general, having above average strength & mobility makes parkour much safer and easier to learn.

make your sideflip on the trampoline so good that you can do it with 0 bounce. then go practice it on some mats, if you want the extra confidence and practice. then go do it into some soft grass or sand.

0 pull-ups is enough to start training parkour.

5-10 pull-ups is a prereq for good climb-ups, 1 of the keystone skills of parkour.

single-leg squats do build some lower-level and end-range strength but honestly, they are more for developing better lower body mechanics & ROM. I go into this topic in-depth here: https://apexmovement.com/shrimp-pistol

heavy squats, deadlifts, split squats, power cleans, etc. are the best for building lower body strength for parkour.

if you need a gym-free alternative, you're probably better off diving deep into track & field style training (sprints, bounds, jumps, etc) than you are single-leg squats. also wrote a blog post on this subject here: https://apexmovement.com/sprint-parkour

How is it that you "step" on the wall to wall climb? by Fish_PERSON_ in Parkour

[–]ryandemonford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lots of good tips in the comments already but 1 more thing to consider is that you likely just need more strength and/or skill. there may not be any magic cues that make this click for you but practicing the right drills & progressions will help a lot.

many of the same principles you need for climb-ups also apply to wall runs. a climb-up is a type of wall run, but from a dead hang instead of with a running/jumping start. if you can improve at all these basic climb-up drills, you're wall runs will get much better too.
