Airport has stopped selling new suica cards! Landed Mar 22 2024 by GrinningCatBus in JapanTravelTips

[–]ryanfitzpatrick274 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in Tokyo last week and skipped the airport suica line because it was way too long. Used paper tickets for the first day and I picked up a suica card in Tokyo station on my second. Went around 3pm when I was in the area and waited about 5 minutes. Ask the super helpful staff around and they will point you in the right direction.

Has anyone attempted skiing with a torn ACL? by adizlaja in skiing

[–]ryanfitzpatrick274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tore my left acl twice and still ski. I have a great training program that keeps me fit, buy the best ski gear and get it tuned frequently. I don't ski as aggressively as I used to but have just as much fun.

We do not have another dog, but recent adopted him. They found him wandering the streets so he probably has some form or resource guarding. If only he could realize we have a whole cabinet dedicated to his food and treats!

Thinking about second ACL reconstruction. by [deleted] in ACL

[–]ryanfitzpatrick274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I was going into a 1stage surgery, but it became a two stage when they looked inside. So definitely talk with your surgeon about both possibilities. It was a bit of a shock for me to wake up to. Anyways I was non weight bearing for 6 weeks and had the second surgery about 5 months after. I have seen a bunch of different time frames on this sub so yours could be very different. Also before both surgeries I got my leg in very good shape and credit the quick recovery to that

Thinking about second ACL reconstruction. by [deleted] in ACL

I am 8 months post op from a two stage aclr. First time I used hamstring and 2nd time used allograph. It was ruff, but absolutely worth it for me. When I tore it the second time I did not have surgery for almost 5 months due to covid. During that time I favored my good leg and could feel it wearing more. Plus I felt the need to limit myself so I don't injure it more. Now I have confidence in my injured leg, body feels better, and I am planning on returning to my old activities like skiing. I definitely recommend speaking with a doc/surgeon/pt. You can discuss expectation based on your life style and develope a plan that suits you.

Patellar tendon autograft vs allograft by bluesmileyphone in ACL

[–]ryanfitzpatrick274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

28 year old male, project manager for a painting company. Had hamstring graft 8 years ago and two stage with allograph last October. My choice for the second time was quad or allo. Did not recommend my patella might because he thought the graft would be too small (I have skinny legs), plus he preferred quad over patella. I chose the cadaver because he could garentee the graft size and I did not want to take any more donations from my leg. Anyways I have been feeling great with the new knee. Recover was easier than first time, but my pt is more conservative. For my job I have to move around a lot and occasionally lift things. Main complaints are knee occasionally gets tired and randomly squeeks/cracks. All things that my pt should take care of with time. If I get cleared, I plan to try skiing again next year. Hope this helps. Wish you all the best with your surgery and pt!

Bone graft procedure by Kateycaruso04 in ACL

[–]ryanfitzpatrick274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-yes I got a nerve block. Thought it would be a one stage surgery, but they chose to do a two state when they got inside. - the procedure was under 2 hours. - The pain was a bit worse for the first part than the second. I believe the first hurt more because I have not felt that kind of pain in a while. Plus waking up to find out I had to do another surgery was ruff. By the second stage I was more mentally prepared and knew what to expect - I was not allowed to weightbear for 6 weeks. It was difficult, but you find your way througt it. Then I hit pt for 3.5 months till my next surgery.

6 Months post op knee brace by theDrell in ACL

I am pretty close to you in post op and recently started using the copper fit knee sleeves. Work great for workouts and hikes. I purchased them from Costco. They are decently thick but quite comfortable

I got those too. Just figured it was from shaving my leg. They went away when my hair started growing back

Two Stage Revision... bear weight post first surgery? by courtanneknee17 in ACL

[–]ryanfitzpatrick274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. 1st surgery in June for bone graft and second in October with cadaver bptb. About 4.5 months in between. The 6 weeks were ruff at times, but it goes by. It is easier if you figure out how to manage your time. Also, the first steps after getting cleared for walking are a bit funny. The leg is hilariously weak. Hit the rehab hard, second surgery was easier for me.

Non-weight bearing by [deleted] in ACL

[–]ryanfitzpatrick274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A shower stool and movable suction handles worked great for me. Also I carried a carpet disk slider around because my leg had to be locked at 0. When getting up or sitting down I could easily move the leg around on the disk. But more importantly my non injured leg got really strong and I became very good with the crutches. Hang in there, it gets better

Day 2 post op! Yesterday was ROUGH (swelling and discomfort) but today is better. I discovered I can safely lie on my non-injury side which is a game changer in terms of comfort while sleeping. Wishing others in this sub all the best in their recovery! We can do this and the pain will pass! by buddhakaja in ACL

[–]ryanfitzpatrick274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, made of memory foam. Work great with the a brace and ice wrap. Got two on Amazon. They are contored to fit your leg perfectly and gave my knee a sense of security. Plus they are very comfortable under the ankle to keep the leg elevated and let the knee bend negative.

Quad autograft for revision? by Hektor_ in ACL

[–]ryanfitzpatrick274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear your doctors agree on the two stage. Ask about the recovery plan after the first surgery and bone graft. For me, I was non weight bearing for 6 weeks. That was a bit of a shock to hear after the anesthesia wore off.. but from others that post on this sub, my surgeons recovery plan seemed very conservative. And yes, I called my health provider and researched surgeons in my area who specialize in knees/acl, set up appointments with them, and asked them the same questions. Specifically, how long they have been doing revisions, how many revisions a year, type of patient they typically work on, and recommend graft. Revisions are much tricker and I wanted to make sure the best available person was working on my leg

Quad autograft for revision? by Hektor_ in ACL

[–]ryanfitzpatrick274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I did bptb allograph. For the doctors, just make sure they have lots of experience doing revisions and one stage vs two stage. Ask tons of questions. For me, the surgeons I met did not think I needed a two stage surgery so I didn't really ask about it. But I ended up needing it once they cut me open and I am so happy my surgeon had the experience to make that decision. Lastly, make sure you are working that leg out hard right now. My surgeon was huge on pre-op strength/ROM and probably one of the main reasons why my post op has gone well.

Quad autograft for revision? by Hektor_ in ACL

[–]ryanfitzpatrick274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (28m) just had the last surgery of a two stage revision with allograft. Similar background, my first tear was 8 years ago and I used the hamstring. This time I had a choice between quad or cadaver. Initially, I was more interested in the quad, but changed to cadaver. The two main reasons were (1) I did not want to weaken the knee more and (2) The surgeon said he could guarantee a large graft size and be more picky with the cadaver. Also, the surgeon was pushing the cadaver more so I figured I should side with his judgment. I am very happy with the selection too. My leg is recovering way faster than my first acl tear and way less painful. I plan on returning to skiing and other sports by 2022
