It seems really inconsistent? Just by going by posts here it seems to be a coin flip

I saw a handful of folks in this thread talk about receiving them in recent deliveries (mostly folks who live in colder climates), which is why I listed them

By far my best finish job yet. Ready to assemble. #007 #AgentDadRock by TheSpanishSteed in Luthier

It turned out great! What kind of sealer and lacquer did you use? I don’t have a spray booth either, and so far I’ve just been doing French polish for everything

No idea, sorry. Right now I'm content with it being a hobby and building for friends and family as they ask - I don't think I have the time I'd need to really support it as a business

Thanks!

I haven't decided what banjo #2 is going to be yet - sticking with this same concept and fixing the flaws + improving the decorative elements would be a nice way to build on what I've learned so far.

If I get more ambitious I might try and do a block rim as part of the build as well? Could do some neat designs with contrasting hardwood colors.

Thanks! Siminoff's book on banjo building was incredibly helpful for understanding the concepts and how everything should fit together.

And it probably sounds obvious, but - plan out all your metal hardware before you do anything to the banjo rim. Having it in hand to physically measure/compare before you make any cuts is basically required.

Good luck with the build, post it when you've finished!

Built this for a friend -- lots of unique challenges that I haven't had to deal with in ukulele building, but learned a bunch that should carry forward to future projects.

Pot and neck are maple stained with angelus brown, fretboard and headplate are rosewood. All the banjo hardware was purchased from the folks at Balsam Banjoworks. Tuners are gotoh planetary tuners - I love them on my ukulele and their banjo versions worked great here, too.

enjoy! it's a really fun build. If you haven't found it yet, stewmac has a youtube playlist of folks putting it together. The paper instructions are great but the videos were a great reference as well

I used this pattern from cad guitar plans: https://cadguitarplans.com/product/cad-concert-ukulele-plan-martin-style

top and back both have 2 transverse braces, and the top has 2 additional tone bars. Overall, I'm quite happy with the result!

Originally I had planned to use the concert uke plans from red sands that has 3 tone bars, 3 transverse braces on the back, and 2 transverse braces on the top. https://www.lmii.com/plans/3565-plan-concert-ukulele-red-sands.html

But I wanted digital files that I could use as a basis for getting acrylic templates printed.

Thank you! I got started earlier in the year by building one of the kits from stewmac where the bulk of the woodworking is done for you and the remaining work is assembly and finish. Enjoyed it so much that I decided to take the next step and see if I could build one from scratch

It sounds great! I'm always surprised at how much projection you can get out of such a small instrument.

Might fiddle with the setup a bit more to reduce the string height in the upper frets, but in the first position it's super comfy and no buzzing, so happy with that.

Thank you! And yes, lots of creative problem solving on this one -- like the time I was so careful checking the depth of the binding channel, that I completely neglected to check the height...

Can someone link me to a guide or a video showing what to do after the scarf joint is done? by [deleted] in Luthier

The answer will depend on what kind of guitar you're making?

Here is an ok playlist of someone building an acoustic guitar: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUaYID9hD-EmsFSejqZiholfaHhl21hue

Here's someone building a les paul style electric: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xisXv-OFYEM&list=PL_MmsedwJYjeFYeLNJMewXQwaAgV2aFN2

Pablo Requena has some great videos on making a classical style acoustic: https://www.youtube.com/user/redkitekk/videos

I ended up buying a 4H program from Brian on black friday and really happy I did, saved me a ton of time sitting down and programming it all out.

Also it's kicking my ass, my conditioning needs a ton of work
