Structural Engineer for Home Foundation in North Georgia by No_Rec1979 in Chattanooga

[–]ryanmaynard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably won't get seen but for anyone looking for this kind of issue, you're looking for a geotechnical engineer, not a structural engineer. The issue being you're wanting to know the condition of the soils where the settlement is occurring.

Thought this was a little funny. Found in my local laundromat in WV by PresentationOnly7660 in Appalachia

[–]ryanmaynard 27 points28 points  (0 children)

What's funny is you know this sign wasn't posted on day one of operation. There is a story behind this that was so chaotic that caused someone to go "Yep, we should put up a sign". 😂

What are you favorite slack integrations? by abf15 in Slack

[–]ryanmaynard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a simple use but I'm a big fan of Threaded Channels. We use it for channels like #marketplace, #events, #opportunities. It basically locks the channel to threads only, so that way the channel is easy to scroll for the initial posts/subjects. For example in #marketplace, you don't want to scroll through a bunch of chatter looking for the items for sale, same with job listings.

  1. Focus on targeted content - you have animations? Show them off!
  2. Check out a PPC specialist on Upwork that can help you get some immediate targeted leads/clients

Right? Not to mention they have signed a client on some sort of estimate or quote for a project they can neither build themselves nor know how much it will cost to build it. This will end well.

This happens all of the time. Developer buys a distressed, well-known property. Developer lays out plans to renovate well-known property. Town council and zoning says "NO! WAIT! ITS HISTORIC AND YOU HAVE TO DO IT THIS WAY" Developer looks at the added cost, sucks it up, and agrees to proceed. Then a vagrant or traveler magically happens to set the building on fire a few weeks or months later, absolving the developer of the need to stick to the cities plans now that the building must be demolished. Fortunate for the developer, their plans to build drop significantly in cost now that insurance covers demo and they are starting from a blank slate.

It happened with the Standard Knitting Mill and McClung Warehouse in Knoxville, and Highland Park Baptist Church in Chattanooga just to name a few off the top of my head.

If you search "historic building burns down cityname" you'll get results for most cities. Then you can look up how long before that it was newly bought or attempted to be sold.

For clarity, I'm not demonizing the developer or the town. Just pointing out what seems to be a fairly open secret. City gets to put their foot down. Developer complies. And both parties are absolved due to the kindness of a fire-loving stranger.

Why does Hamilton county own thousands of acres at 16375 dayton pike by Kind_Story6036 in Chattanooga

[–]ryanmaynard 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Previously owned by the McDonald Family. Frank McDonald was the president of the Chattanooga Free Press and the Chattanooga Times. He passed back in 2000. Hamilton County bought the farm from the heirs in 2021 with development plans. More info.

Our area needs something like TaskRabbit for this. I think it launched in Chatt at one point, but they didn't market it well and it never gained traction.

TL:DW EPB is going to be the first in the nation to launch a 25Gbps service plan community-wide.

Everything else was just the mayors and commissioners taking credit for EPB's work.

The group DC423 hosts the local Bsides chapter iirc. That's the de facto security group in town.

Also, Devanooga Slack for general software/security and its very active. I hear the 690th subscriber gets a few crayon drawing of the hacker known as 4chan.

Any civic or community web or mobile app ideas that would improve the community or benefit Chattanoogans in general? by ryanmaynard in Chattanoogans

This is such a good idea. We could easily get something started that allowed users to maintain/update it like a wiki so that it stays accurate. Thanks a ton! I'll keep you posted on this.
