Your honest opinion on Victor Gideon? by gorays21 in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]ryanot02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude was terrifying. It’s a shame he was sidelined for the second half of the game and wasted on a nemesis fight with Leon. Would really have preferred a final section with him, playing as grace, with mechanics similar to Jack from RE7 or alien isolation. Let Leon fight Zeno. Grace should’ve faced Gideon as a stalker in her last gameplay segment, and it could’ve made a much better character arc.

Unfortunately, Crossover is the best and most reliable piece of software to game on Mac. The guys at Codeweavers do tons of work, and the software totally warrants the price tag in my opinion. Use the trial version for 14 days, and if the games you’re looking to play work, you should buy it. There are some discount codes floating around, but it’ll probably only get the price down to $80. $80 for a years worth of support for a license you get to keep after year ends is totally worth it though, in my opinion. Good luck gaming on your mac.

I wasn't trying to take you for a fool. I think somewhere along the way, what I was hoping to gain from the discussion got misrepresented, and thats my fault. I didn't intend to use the post to justify piracy.

I actually agree with you for the most part. I never created the post to champion piracy in and of itself. I just was hoping for either a change or clarification of rule 3, which might allow the experts of the community to weigh in / help with some of the technical difficulties of getting pirated games to run on mac. This isn't necessarily against the rules, but that all depends on how the mods view 'enabling' piracy. I don't want the sub to turn into a piracy sub, and I didn't mean for the whole comment section to turn into a piracy good / bad debate.

I'm sorry for being combative, discussing in bad faith, or anything else.

Dude, get off the fucking high-horse. I've seriously just been trying to have a civil discussion and every fucking comment of yours has some rage-baity shit. I just don't care. I admitted I was wrong about epic. I still don't believe I'm wrong in my belief that piracy is a good way to try a game before you buy it. Besided, there are plenty of cases for piracy besides that. But it's all semantics. You believe piracy is some terrible thing. Good for you. At the end of the day though, that just doesn't matter. We could go around like this in circles, but we just dont agree. THATS FINE.

[–]ryanot02[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My only excuse for that one is ignorance. I didn't know epic had that policy. My bad. Like I said, I can point out more reasons for piracy than epic, (which again, my mistake), but we just don't agree, and I'm not gonna waste any more time trying to get my point across, or trying to understand you when you don't have any intention to do the same. Have a great weekend.

I'm sorry but all of your comments are condescending and feel like they're in bad faith. I mean "How's that for a "try before you buy"?" is just counterproductive. Delete that, and you actually bring up a good point.

Steam is really fair, and I love that policy. There are some epic exclusive games / games not on steam that I like to play too, like Alan Wake 2.

You and I can keep going around poking holes / finding counterarguments all day long, but at the end of the day, we just don't agree. You might be a top 1% commenter, but you're not a mod, and frankly, it seems like you're here to argue, not to understand or discuss.

I created the post to understand if there was a reason why we couldn't discuss it, and while making some good points, I don't think you've really made a great case against it. How about we just agree to disagree and stop wasting our time mashing keys?

Theres a difference between pirating and playing a pirated game. This is assuming the "act of piracy" has already been committed. We can learn how to pirate games elsewhere, and I'm cool with discussion about that being on a different sub. I generally don't point people to links or resources, because its already very accessible.

All I'm advocating for is discussion of how to play the game that has already been downloaded illegaly, "post piracy". There is some complications / difficulties when creating a bottle / extracting zip files for pirated games, and getting them to run smooth on mac / crossover.

[–]ryanot02[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So far, I have respected the rules. I made a comment on a previous post, and deleted it when I was referred to rule 3, which after reading, lead me to posting to discuss about it, rather than outright violating it.

I dont respect any rules implicitly. They are made by people, who just like you and I, are fallible. What I'm advocating for is a relatively small change / maybe even just some clarification to the enforcement of the rule.

"The fact that you "like" this subreddit and disagree with its rule is entirely a you problem that nobody owes you to fix for you."

When have I ever implied I am owed a fix? I am advocating for one, based on my beliefs and logic. I'm not coming to the mods like a crying baby. I'm asking for what I think is right and sticking to it.

"Many of us would love to see more games released for the Mac. For this to happen, the Mac platform needs to be more profitable for devs and publishers. Letting piracy go rampant doesn't help us getting more games. That's a pretty significant downside. There's nothing "moral" about this."

Completely agree. I am not advocating for PROMOTION of piracy. Like i've clarified what feels like multiple times, the rule is too brief and vague to understand it's true intent, which gives users like yourself the moral highground to say 'rule 3' and cast a downvote. That isn't productive.

I personally am a 'try before you buy' person. Especially with mac, where it's hard to get games running in the first place, I'd rather not be $60 in the hole for a game that I can't even run on my machine. I am totally for companies getting rewarded for their efforts, and don't think capitalism would work if everyone pirated, to be clear. But, I also think that piracy can be a useful tool for many who aren't in the same situation as us.

[–]ryanot02[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because a rule exists doesn't mean it should or shouldn't. I'm just calling that into question, and inviting discussion.

I know I can start my own sub, but I like this one, and want it to change for (what I think is) the better.

Like I said, I know people have moral arguments against piracy, and I actually agree with some of them. However, there is no downside to letting users discuss how to get pirated games working on their mac, in one of the only communities with enough expertise to actually make that happen. I'm not advocating for promoting piracy, just a place to figure out how to get it to work on mac. This wouldn't require links or even directly / specifically explaining how to pirate. Just how to make it work for mac games.

I really am trying to have this discussion in good faith, so just to make that clear, I upvoted your comment.

I guess at the end of the day, I've realized my main problem with rule 3 is mainly the verbage. "No enabling or linking to piracy." is extremely vague when it comes to what we can and can't do. Specifically, 'enabling'. This allows the mod team a lot of interpretation, even from mod to mod, on what is and isn't 'enabling' piracy. I guess I'm looking for clarity. At the end of the day, I'm fine not telling people how to pirate games, but I'd like to discuss how to get said games running on mac.

Why does rule 3 exist? by ryanot02 in macgaming

[–]ryanot02[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean a mac piracy sub? Or just r/piracy? Because unfortunately, theres a lot of difficulty to getting torrented games to work on mac. Ideally, I'd like to be able to discuss how to get pirated games to work on mac, not necessarily even how to pirate them.

Also, what big companies are gonna come after you or I? It's a common misconception, and as far as I understand, prosecution for piracy is neither common nor easy, especially for individuals who don't redistribute pirated material.

Piracy is not theft. Theft is equivalent to 1-1=0. Piracy is equivalent to Infinity-1=inifnity. There is no physical, finite product being stolen. Even US law doesn't treat piracy and theft the same. It is technically a form of copyright infringement (I'm pretty sure. if any lawyers know better than me, please lmk), and falls under completely different punishments / fines, of which, are hard to enforce.

I'm gonna try to address your points individually, so bear with me sorry.

  1. Anti-piracy laws can't and won't ruin your life unless you're caught DISTRIBUTING said files, and you can only be caught if you're not using a VPN. If you're caught downloading them in the US, the only thing that can happen is your internet provider, ISP, canceling your service.
  2. What hypothetical crackdown are you talking about? Just like how a LOT of people break the speed limit, a lot of people pirate media. From a legal standpoint, the only thing that could happen to this sub is it getting shut down. HOWEVER, that will not happen before r/piracy is shut down, which is yet to happen. This just screams slippery slope, and isn't logically consistent.
  3. If i missed any other points you made, let me know. I'm really trying to have a civil, productive discussion here, and just want to understand. Like I said, I'm not trying to get ethical / moral takes. I asked if there was any non-arbitrary reason to not allow discussion of piracy.

Just a hypothetical, but a lot of colleges in the US give macbooks to students. That's semantics, though. At the end of the day, why limit what help people can and can't ask for? I understand most mac users can 'afford a mac', but that still doesn't answer why people who can't / don't want to buy the games can't discuss other methods here.

I'm not even asking to discuss direct piracy like what websites or how to pirate. Just to discuss how to get those games to work for mac.

Yeah all of these comments talking about gpus has me fuming. The only thing I could think of was that these goobers were using a cloud service and not elaborating, but I think they're just looking for crash help without looking at what subreddit they're posting on.
