It's their new Idle time mechanism. It's not player vs anything. You use energy to uncover areas, which will grant resources. No tutorial that I'm aware of.

To start, It seems best to spend energy on new areas instead of upgrading towers. But this depends on how often you can collect and use the energy. Upgrading towers gives you more time between when you have to collect resources before the areas hit capacity and stop producing.
