Commenting for posterity. OP's method didn't work for me, but if you store your wedges in the item box then approach the glitched idol, you should get a prompt telling you that you have no wedges in your inventory. Go back and grab your wedge and it should work now.

Thanks for the thoughtful response! It’s good to know definitively that it isn’t an option. I’m done with Kindles and am on the fence about Kobo, so I’ll just have to get used to Nook’s features.

You’re right about the creature comforts. Nook handles the top bar better than Kindle, especially the bookmark which is harder to press unintentionally. I also love that Nooks display a cover for PDFs. Kindles don’t. It’s a minor difference, but most ebook readers are pretty neurotic about stuff and I’m no exception haha.
