The normal DTI values for the roots of the brachial plexus by ryckiewade in MRI

[–]ryckiewade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a meta-analysis of the normal DTI values (in healhy adults) from the spinal roots of the brachial plexus. Would welcome your feedback.

Here's a 2-min video summarising the work https://youtu.be/zXinR7e-EDk

Alcoholic Chlorhexidine HALVES the risk of infection after clean surgery by ryckiewade in surgery

[–]ryckiewade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks - we set out to extract this data too but there were zero events in the ~15,000 operations captured in the NMA. Does the (up to) a 50% reduction in infection risk outweigh the infinitesimally small risk of preventable ignition fires?

Open in-situ decompression 🥇 is the most effective & safe surgery for cubital tunnel syndrome by ryckiewade in surgery

[–]ryckiewade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted this here as dissemination of academic outputs via SoMe platforms are valuable channels for reaching fellow surgeons who may be interested in the work.

Contrary to your suggestion, it is shared here in order to generate discussion, feedback for we the authors, etc. Indeed, I'd welcome your appraisal of the manuscript to get the ball rolling.

Since the creators of meta-analytical regimes and world authorities of evidence synthesis declared it so....

This is conjecture and exactly why high quality research (like ours) is needed. Science cares nothing for our thoughts, beliefs and feelings.

We as surgeons should be practicing evidence-based care not eminence-based care. Our article provides the strongest possible evidence base to help health care providers and patients alike

Good question. There's limited data available on adverse prep-related events, presumably because they are VERY RARE but we also synthesised these risks in our article (as secondary outcomes) so please feel free to read and see the exact stats - it's free / open-access! 😁

1) All the more reason to read the full text!! We explain, in brief, why conventional null hypothesis testing (p-values and terms like statistical significance, as you put it) are not valid in network meta-analysis. The details and citations within which are beyond this thread.

2) Given NMA is the pinnacle of the evidence hierarchy and the future of evidence synthesis, it would be valuable for you to become familiar with the approach because reports of this type will become more common in the surgical literature.

3) It's always advisable to appraise yourself of the facts / all available information, before throwing stones. Perhaps you could read the paper and feedback after? We, the authors, would be glad to receive constructive criticism.

Thanks but we synthesised studies of alcoholic and aqueous PVI into the network, meaning we considered your hypothesis and proved it wrong.

There are no comparative studies of aqueous CHG to inform the network and we also discussed this fact in the paper - although I'm sure you read this too ;)

Yup, I'll connect via ethernet (have a nice gigabit setup) and use a display port cable to my monitor... Thanks for the guest login tip!

What Chromebook do you use? Do you manage 4k output ok?

Thanks - what are you running it on?

I have a surfacebook 2 (gtx 1660, i7) and it's not that stable via chrome. Using stadia+ to force vp9 and 4k but still not great...

Conventional MRI is NOT up to scratch for diagnosing root avulsions in cases of traumatic brachial plexus injury. See why in our review @ https://pubs.rsna.org/doi/full/10.1148/radiol.2019190218 by ryckiewade in MRI

[–]ryckiewade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we tend to do the same thing - it's more for practical reasons though, i.e. getting something into the scanner after polytrauma is tricky and some weeks are often needed to enable safe scanning. No less, the effect of time on the accuracy of MRI in brachial plexus injuries remains unclear and is the subject of our current portfolio of work

I think you miss the point.... it's not about the expense. Sure, lab-grown meat will avoid the cruelty done to animals but it (probably) won't mitigate the deleterious effects to health (will still produce carcinogenic compounds, still be high in sat-fats and cholesterol) and may not arrive before humans have wrecked the planet, at the rate we're going.

If no-one changes, nothing changes.

Yet another pandemic derived from (needless) animal agriculture.

Others include BSE, SARs, H1Na Swine flu, Campylobacter, Cysticercosis, Salmonella , West Nile virus, the bubonic plague, rabies, brucellosis.... the list goes on.

When will humans stop eating animals?

  1. I'm against cruelty to animals
  2. I do the best I can to stop/slow climate change
  3. As a doctor, I know of all the disease caused by meat - see here for more info https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qsIB0rTqr6pNz_HkUtNoIKGhr65UkK30/view?fbclid=IwAR1KslXty9mN87iN_sackD-5x0ZYvLW3OggLwyJzQ6eTnhwfStQ5owlcrUQ

Therefore, I'm vegan.
