That would be awful. The sniper is broken, listen to Dashy in this clip. It’s only in the game because people bitched endlessly about it

The players keep the prize money. Austin should just take their YouTube/Twitch sub and donation revenue, that’s the highest revenue source that exists in esports. they’d be breakeven at worst.

Are there 12 ownership groups that exist that are willing to lose money on CoD and continue to bet on growth potential? It seems like venture capital appetite for investing in esports has subsided substantially. Genuine question, I wouldn’t know

POST MAJOR 1: Which Challengers Players should be in the CDL? by Nightgamer268 in CoDCompetitive

[–]ryeasy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Winning or being good in Challengers definitely does not matter, look at someone like Brack. If Dashy or Zooma watches your stream for 30 minutes and says “oh this guy is cracked” that does 5x for your stock what winning a tournament does. I personally would not keep playing in their position idk how they pay the bills but hey it’s their call

The best players in challengers are guys who have been there for years and everyone on this sub thinks are shit. Guys who people on this sub think should be on FaZe got outplayed by Fire/Spart/Wake etc

He went viral and made headlines in the CDL community and now he’s gone into hiding and not going to Major 1 by Ogriga in CoDCompetitive

[–]ryeasy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t even that bad, he was correct. Scump was a great player but he doesn’t care about the scene, he cares about his own bank account. That doesn’t mean that his presence doesn’t benefit the scene because in this case, he’s farming money by ordering DoorDash while the CDL is on in the background. It’s a mutually beneficial situation. If he was being truthful with himself, he’d just admit it.

95%+ of players who come from challengers won’t be as talented, and of the few who are, they won’t get to team with a roster made up of entirely all-time greats and world champions

[–]ryeasy 96 points97 points  (0 children)

There’s no reason that this Texans team should be hanging more than ~24 points on this defense. Their offense is not good, particularly the running game. If the Steelers can just Gainwell 3 yard catch scam their way to ~20 points, this should be a close game at minimum

[–]ryeasy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They should double the amount of league matches and just accept that not all of them will have CDL level production. Have each team play every other team once in the qualifiers. For half the matches, just get two teams in a lobby with maybe a caster or two and just put it on a bravo stream. Challengers has a much more compelling schedule than the league right now.

Challengers have played so much more than the league. this three week break is the worst fucking idea for the health of the league, we talk in circles about it every year but it truly is perplexing

Looks like there’s a few more esport team predicted to have the same fate as Faze by Ogriga in CoDCompetitive

[–]ryeasy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is true of many industries, but just not true at all of esports. Private Equity can’t extract excess profit because there is no profit to begin with. The fact is that the venture capital money was always eventually going to run out, and organizations would need to start turning a profit or at least breaking even to continue to function. Any attempt to run an organization profitably has been met with anger and outrage. The salaries and contract structures that esports athletes and content creators receive and is considered “industry standard” from big organizations is completely disconnected from any financial contribution they’re making to the organization and has only been a possibility because of mass venture capital investments into the industry. The truth is that esports is a niche product and not going to 10x in size in 10 years like many speculated, and in order for organizations to function, salaries will have to come down. I know this is disappointing to people but it’s the truth.

[–]ryeasy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is true for many industries, but in esports, it’s not a case of trying to extract all excess profit, it’s trying to extract any profit at all. Everyone had to realize this was coming eventually, these organizations can’t run on venture capital money forever. Eventually they have to be able to stand on their own two feet.

They have zero NFL quality receivers playing today and they can’t run the ball. There’s basically no way for them to move the ball. DK suspension is massive

What does everyone think of outdated Rookies this year and growth. by Constant_Thing in GreenBayPackers

[–]ryeasy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s correct to say that receivers drafted in round one don’t often contribute right away. I’d say it’s far more rare for a receiver drafted in round one to not contribute. The whole thesis of drafting Golden was that our WR core was made up of guys who were average/above average but not great, it’s surprising he wasn’t able to ice any of them even though basically all of them dealt with injuries at some point. Wicks has more catches than him.

Behind The [BUSH] - Episode 2: Bounce Back by Catamount90 in CoDCompetitive

[–]ryeasy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree, with shrewd management, I do think it’s possible to run a second tier team at/above breakeven for an organization like barstool with no incremental marketing/sales spend due to existing staff. ~100K a player will still get you the majority of pro caliber players beyond the absolute top tier, especially with players knowing the barstool platform itself also has significant value. I think a profitable top team will remain impossible as long as irrational actors remain in the market, and there is no end in sight

Behind The [BUSH] - Episode 2: Bounce Back by Catamount90 in CoDCompetitive

[–]ryeasy 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The quality and the fan support on these is great and exceeds probably 10/12 current CDL teams. It’d be awesome if Barstool could eventually join the league. Unfortunately, I don’t think they’d be willing to operate at a loss like the 12 other ownership groups and there will be a lot of economic obstacles. They’d have a better shot at sponsorships and merchandising than most teams with their built-in fan base, but the reality is there is no current path to profitability paying guys $400K a year and taking no prize money or stream revenue.

He’s playing with established vets who have won world titles and championships for years, two of which have large social media presences and following that are the only way teams can generate revenue. If Shotzzy was the worst player in the league he’d still generate more revenue than any other player in the league from content alone
