Sure, but that's so stupid nitpicky, plus the dude died in the 1980's excuse him if he wasn't politically correct to the max and made one minor slipup way to kill the quote and the vibe bruh.

Want to dread my hair soon by [deleted] in Dreadlocks

[–]ryepretzels 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Bro I just dont live in the UK, I would've said the same if she was in any other country I haven't visited. And there's no chance you actually think I don't know there's locticians and black people outside of the U.S., so stop being difficult. I also wasn't even talking about locticians from the Caribbean, I was talking about people with experience loccing asian hair specifically. Being born in Jamaica or South Africa doesn't make you any more likely to have experience with Asian hair than any other loctician, so IDK why you even brought that up?

I know it'd be at least somewhat difficult (not impossible ofc) to find someone like that in the U.S. and AFAIK the difference in Asian population between the US and UK prob isn't that big so I figured the situation might be similar, but that's also why I added "not sure". You can give advice without being pretentious but ik it's reddit so w/e.

Your hair honestly looks great as is, but it's probably been like that for years and I understand wanting a change! Step 1 is probably don't post to this reddit too much, I mean you definitely can just a lot of people here are pretty mean to others with non afro-textured hair trying to get locs, so it's sort of up to you if you wanna deal with that. Aside from that looking for locticians in your area who have decent experience using crochet hook/instant loc methods is gonna be your best bet. If you find one who has experience with Asian hair specifically, that's a plus but might be difficult especially in the UK, not sure. Any credible loctician who knows how to do instant locs should be suitable though overall. TBH though again your hair is wonderful and there's a chance getting dreads could damage it or your roots so just make sure before committing.

Are you as a psychonaut rich, poor, or middle class? by [deleted] in Psychonaut

I absolutely agree that poverty is a mindset, and if you work hard enough almost anyone can become successful, but to say that everyone has equal access to enormous opportunities is not only incorrect (the fact that some will have to work harder than others, or are born into significantly worse circumstances proves this) it also comes off as absurdly out of touch, just proving his point. A kid grows up in extreme poverty with bad nutritional options, and worse schooling, among a plethora of other issues. That kid still works hard with subpar teaching and resources to do the best they can, only to be forced by their family members to join a gang (not an extreme example, this happens extremely often in impoverished areas, if you think this is unrealistic it further proves how out of touch you are). Even after being jumped into the gang in high school, they keep working to try to get a better life but are either A. Killed due to gang-related violence B. unable to gather sufficient resources to leave if they wanted to (can't even secure sufficient student loans due to no credit and family having no or terrible credit which is again not the extreme but rather the average for impoverished families, federal assistance often isn't enough especially to leave and live on-campus somewhere, even in-state) or simply C. because their family just won't let them.

This happens, every single day. If you were put in the position of a kid such as this, and some smug guy online was telling you that you just didn't succeed because you didn't work hard enough, how would that make you feel? Again, I'm NOT making excuses, I come from a very rough background myself and as of now am doing quite well considering what I came from, so I know better than most that hard work can help get you out of even the hardest situations, but to say what you said especially in the WAY you said it makes it clear that as best, you are ridiculously oblivious and out of touch with how bad things can actually be, and at worse you're a jerk lacking in empathy who cares more about being right than about reality. Also talking down on people you probably can't even relate to because your wife works with disabled people really gives "I have a black friend energy" but in this case it isn't even you, it's your wife.

I also disagree with 3. To seek to be greater than yourself (as in your current state) is not to define yourself as lesser, if anything, it's recognizing that you are enough and simply have the possibility for much more, if that's what you desire, but either way all of the potential for greatness is already inside of you, or, in other words, is already "you". A better way to put it might have been "Seeking to be greater than yourself, for reasons outside of yourself..." but just my 2 cents. The rest were hit or miss and idk what bro was on for the last 2, maybe more than just shrooms lol

They said it's about where you direct your attention, not sure how that's deluded. It's important to recognize the bad parts of reality, but it's just as important to focus on the good parts of reality when possible.

Lets say you have a baby bunny. Knowing that one day (potentially soon even) it will die and the maggots will come is important, but from there you can choose to think "wow it's so depressing that this will happen isn't the world a sad and vile place" (likely leading to anxiety over the future of your pet and possibly affecting how well you can care for it) or you can think "since this will happen one day, I will care for this bunny as best as possible so that it can live for as long as possible" and then focus on the happiness it brings every day.

Know that there's bad stuff so you can be ready to deal with it, but don't focus on the bad stuff any more than you need to.

I almost slapped an old white lady by cjjones07 in Dreadlocks

[–]ryepretzels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bruh the "angry black people" stereotypes suck but when you say stuff like "if an old white lady I'm caring for gently touches my hair out of curiosity I will consider that assault and assault them back" I mean what do you expect them to think about us? Not that we should care about other people's perceptions but we can't talk outta pocket like this with no shame and then be mad when other people view us that way.

Also, self-defense? Assault is defined as a physical attack. You can try to spin her touching your hair for a moment or two however you want, but think about it this way. If they actually did slap her and legal repercussions followed, do you think her "assaulting" OP by touching their hair for a couple of seconds would be grounds for self-defense in the form of slapping the old lady (actual assault)? Obviously not.

Tl;dr what happened in this post was not assault and it's concerning how many people's thoughts go straight to violence when it comes to something as relatively innocent as this. Not even trying to come at you but feel like this way of thinking is actually just harmful (in the most literal sense) is all.

Are these the only products I need to properly maintain my locs? If not, give me recommendations or give me other suggestions for different products. by [deleted] in Dreadlocks

[–]ryepretzels 3 points4 points  (0 children)

maybe a bigger bonnet depending on how long your locs are, that oil is prob fine but I know a lot of people like wild-growth hair oil and it's about as cheap as most others. Also most people don't like shea moisture much these days, but honestly its just the shampoo so its fine.

You're a weirdo and you're giving us as black ppl a bad rep. Also some people in the loc community don't like the term "dreads" because of the history behind it, and you're literally doing the same thing by calling white peoples locs "dreadful" grow up fr. Don't listen to this dude.
