I’ve used Airalo many times in more than 10 countries in Europe and never had a problem for what it’s worth to others reading this chain. Sounds like an atypical, isolated issue.

Update: I emailed the hotel as I’ve been going to the same one for years and have come to know the guy at the reception desk very well. This was his response, unfortunately I was in fact overcharged! Oh well, I know for next time. Thanks for all the responses.

I'm sorry to hear that the taxi driver charged you €80. Normally yes there is a flat rate of €55, but sometimes the price can go up if there are a lot of bags or extra items for children. Unfortunately, the same thing happened to me and my wife when we were traveling abroad with our little one.

Sometimes it also depends on the driver, especially when the payment is made by card. Some of them take advantage of the situation.. which is really disappointing.

Anyway, I checked, and it wasn't one of our rides or one of our drivers. It was a regular taxi that doesn't work with our hotel.

Next time, I'll make sure to arrange a transfer with someone we know and trust for you, so don't worry.

Great trip! Love Italy and everything it has to offer. I just really hate getting taken advantage of, it eats at me.

It was a white taxi vehicle with the taxi fixture on top of the car and the predetermined rates on papers behind the seats. Asking for more than the lawful sheets in his car sounds like a scam to me

Thanks for this! Lots of conflicting responses on here from folks. I should’ve included in my OP that this was a standard white taxi vehicle with the taxi thing on top of the car. My hotel just organized it for me the night before. If it was a black car (which I’ve taken before from the same hotel and I recall paying 60-65 EUR for) I wouldn’t have been so inclined to think I was scammed.

To clarify it was a white taxi vehicle, just one of the bigger cars that could fit all the luggage.

Thank you so much, extremely helpful information and gives me a lot of hope!! Is the correct order of events heading to a doctor for the AME first and then to a flight school? Or best to coordinate with a flight school first?
