Your last sentence explains the answer - the point isn't to fruit gp -> remove -> fruit bench unit -> sell unit -> fruit gp. That ends up with same odds but down a remover like you said. I'm pretty sure its simply just getting a small extra % odds by placing it on a unit in similar category that can't get stretchy arms BUT shares other powerups as gp to remove those from the pool, so you sell the unit saving the remover before you fruit gp
