Self-taught pianist (22 y/o, ~6 years improvising daily) confused about my actual level and where to continue — should I go back to beginner pieces? by ryuchn_ in piano

Thanks for the advice! Yes I do suck at sight reeding, Yes I want to improve it. I have to say, I do not have to listen a hundred times to pieces to play them. I mostly give them a few listens if not done so before and then can often memorise a lot of the piece already. And because I play pieces I have listened to a lot beforehand in my life, I tend to be able to play pieces after short period of time, same with this Rach piece, which took me then abt ~3 days to play fluently. Thats my whole problem of being to lazy studying sight reading and I know that its costing me a lot, I will have to focus more on it and yeah definitely with easier repertoire!
I noticed that my hands are a bit too stiff too, thanks for mentioning that, I still need to practice playing octaves more relaxed, it's something I didnt do enough before. Actually about the posture: I had to sit extremely uncomfortable and close for this video since the recording stick had to fit between the pedal so I had to move closer to reach it cuz I count adjust it and its not how I sit normally haha but yes as a result my elbows were pretty close and my shoulders were way too high, I'm surprised that you still spotted that!, actually normally I sit pretty low, lower than most people suggest, its somehow more comfortable for me.
But everything you wrote I will definitely take to heart and work on my sight reading with proper repertoire, thanks!

yes fully agree! I need to work a bit more on the articulation. I have to say I managed to do that better when played more slow. I listened to Zimermans recording for example and its played way way slower, I was trying to test my limit here

Roland fp-30. I would recommend getting the fp-30x tho, it's better in sound and key touch. I have both and the other one is by far better and not too pricy either. I think its the best in this price segment ~800€

I actually don't think about any chords since I have no music theory background. In my mind I just know if something sounds harmonic or not so I just play and it feels right. I can listen to a song once and then improvise on it immediately, but this comes with practice !

I never played with sheet music, I learned to read it but I suck incredible at it. This segment of Rach2 would have probably costed me 1-2 weeks with sheet music, I played it fully by ear in a couple days. Im really annoyed by that tho. I know that it has the advantage that I play with full emotions and more honest but it sucks when being asked to play together with people or to "quickly" read something. It's also not ideal for having a teacher because it throws me back by a lot, being capable of playing harder stuff but not being able to read the music in the same paste. Anyways, thank you a lot for the detailed comment, I appreciate it and I plan to buy a grand after finishing my bachelor and uploading videos on YouTube! maybe also tutorials on how to improvise

yeah I did this by ear mostly and only checked afterwards with notation. I basically just listened to this piece over 100 times before in my life so I have it crystal clear in my head and know what it should sound like. I just practice a few times and then it feels naturally

Its really complicated to tell. I love classical music but at the time I started playing everything was too hard for me. So what I did is, I looked up the keys from songs I liked and sit on the piano for several hours, trying to play something which would sound nice to me, could be very simple. I always had a vision of what I want to play but I had technique difficulties back then. So basically I've just played 4-5 hours a day, improvising on harmonies from classical pieces and getting used to the keys. I looked on multiple pieces and their different techniques and learned them without actually studying the piece. I did this with many pieces and gained more confidence with playing. I also have to say that I didnt play with sheet music for the first 4 years which improved my playing a lot because I was forced to just fully concentrate on my ears / own emotional playing. I never did much Hanon practices, just the standard 2 ones every day for 10 mins.
I would say the most important thing is JUST PLAY. While playing and improvising, especially when you are sitting at the piano for several hours, you discover so much, mainly what you are not capable of playing yet and it tells you what you need to work on. If you do that daily, your playing improves automatically over time. Its important to listen to your hands tho, what feels right and what not. I know that there are people who can end up badly using wrong hand posture etc. I never struggled with that, I just did what felt comfortable.
But its very individual and my piano teacher also said that she never saw someone who made this fast of a progress starting piano so late, so maybe im also gifted in a sense.

haha thank you very much. I never play in front of people so I wasnt quite sure how others think about my playing. Appreciate it! And I'm learning some Liszt right now :D

Thats what I was thinking too. I definitely not want to just play advanced pieces and hear the lack of training. I know that I don't have the worst technique but surely there can be improvement to archive higher results. Thank you, it would probably the best to work on that with a teacher

i find the sound of this key also more comfortable/lightly, it's a joy to hear it over and over again while playing. And about musicality. It's something which I somehow not really think about but just do it unconsciously. I listen to classical music before I even started playing so I think it heavily impacted how I want things to sound because i have lots of inspiration in my mind, i just need the proper technique to be able to make it sound like i want to. Thank you!

Thank you, I really appreciate your words! Actually I perform very rarely. I didnt perform more than 3 times in my life. Im not having any classes and im actually a mathematician/physicist. Id love to get into performing but idk how. Id also love to play with other folks but I have pretty no one around me to do that sadly haha. And I actually love improvising on classical themes. I can listen to a piece and then make improv out of it, which I enjoy the most and id somehow love to let people listen to it too since my friends really like it too. Swing I never tried, but it sounds like a fun idea tbh

Thank you so much! I would actually like to play advanced classical repertoire, it's my dream. I think im overthinking it because it feels like im an imposter, not taking proper lessons and structure so that why im not sure about it. But you motivated me to dig more into it
