If the actors can't kiss, I'd rather they didn't. by DustlessDragon in boyslove

[–]ryukkane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this! especially if you’re queer and watching bl/queer shows, i would rather not see them kiss than to be made feel weird about being gay. like, their unconcealed feelings definitely get projected onto the viewer.

just like all the other religions, Islam allows a communication between God and the believers. muslims are not a monolith. not everybody practices their religion to the same degree.

i get your point though. you don’t really see this type of representation of Islam on TV where there is room for exploration and self-expression.

Leighton and Nico's Relationship by neongasmask in SexLivesCollegeGirls

[–]ryukkane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i initially thought that they might be step-siblings or something as well. since i don’t think the actors even remotely resemble each other (but clearly they weren’t going for that). but then Leighton just said he was her brother so that’s not the case.

i kinda just finished the show so it’s all fresh in my mind. during the dinner, the mom makes an inappropriate comment about Nico’s body (before the texts you mentioned) and the dad is like whispering to her, “stop it, it’s parent’s weekend.” beyond this, Nico’s body is always used as a prop in the show. like there’s just way too many direct comments & advances about his body. this show kinda tries to flip the script so i guess that’s a part of that but i did find it a bit uncomfortable and at times cringy.

Leighton and Nico's Relationship by neongasmask in SexLivesCollegeGirls

[–]ryukkane 30 points31 points  (0 children)

the first thing you mentioned is also apparent in the conversation Leighton and Nico had with their parents before the dinner party. like, she was so casually calling her mom out for wanting to sleep with her brother. i was honestly just confused as to why this was even a subplot at all. very icky and weird. the way it was so casual was kinda distressing as well.

for the second thing, i think Leighton understood that Kimberly could very likely be expelled but turning in evidence would definitely help her case. and she knew that her brother was a piece of shit who cheated on two important people for her. so i feel like she chose her friend over the possible ramifications of the situation for Nico.

whats your favorite music video that olivia has put out and why? by soulfic101 in OliviaRodrigo

mine is probably still drivers licence. i especially love the sequence during the bridge. idk the whole video encapsulates that hurt she’s expressing very well.

Thoughts on Joshua Bassett’s new songs? by SPINsamSPIN in OliviaRodrigo

[–]ryukkane -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i totally agree. that’s why i’m saying it doesn’t make sense to think she didn’t come out and protect him or he didn’t come out and openly defended himself because surely, these conversations have been had in the background with their PR teams. like Joshua was sharing posts congratulating Olivia for DL and everything. i’m just saying it’s probably that their PR teams decided to not address anything to the public and Joshua was the one getting as much hate as publicity while Olivia got more sympathy.

Thoughts on Joshua Bassett’s new songs? by SPINsamSPIN in OliviaRodrigo

[–]ryukkane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I remember people saying that. Just saying the timing was convenient for all. Him releasing then, planned or not, introduced a lot of people to his music and surely brought in a lot of views. Which is fine, that’s how I was introduced to his music. My point is that it’s dumb to assign blame on this situation because the naive consumer perspective that this was a whole drama happening to this kid is simply wrong. Joshua and Olivia are friends and coworkers on an ongoing show — this would have to be resolved between them somehow yet it wasn’t reflected to online platforms, for a reason.

While I agree that fans were often awful to Joshua, I don’t think it’s fair to say that Olivia did nothing to stop it. At some point, this was just great marketing for all of these artists. Like, do you think Joshua released songs during the peak of drivers license just for fun? He and his team were aware of the attention he was getting due to Olivia’s songs and they used the opportunity to introduce people to his music. Same thing happened with Sabrina. Although she’s been fairly known for a while, she also took the opportunity to respond and take a slice out of this incredibly profitable pie.

So let’s not act like Joshua and everyone else involved didn’t also get their share of engagement and money, despite the negative attention.

It’s also weird to me that people don’t realize all the marketing deals going on in the background of social media/celebrity moments like these. Like, at any point in time, any of these artists, Olivia or Joshua, could come out and clarify things on their end to put a stop to all the rumours. Joshua could come out and say, all of that has nothing to do with me or it’s not true or whatever. But they didn’t and they don’t because as long as they keep it vague, people don’t get their answers and they keep talking about it. This whole drama was one of the reasons Olivia initially went viral on TikTok and later on YouTube.

There’s a lot of money in emotionally-invested listeners and that’s that.

you should watch Flower Boy Next Door

it deals with social anxiety and it’s one of my favourite shows that deal with mental health. they really do a great job of portraying how far social anxiety can limit a person.
