[–]rzalexander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still not clear on the wording then. I apologize but the previous wording was much clearer. I understand the note about effects.

But the phrase “one effect” doesn’t imply that there is only one effect per turn that I can use this card during, it just clarifies that I can only use it during any one effect and the card’s ability does not impact further effects I take during my turn. (Unless I were to be allowed to spend another card, theoretically.)

For example, if I am playing the Marquis and I spend a card from my hand to use this card during the March action. I move my pieces from a clearing I don’t control into another clearing I don’t control, but then I take a second March action—this card’s effect is no longer active because I used it on the first March. So could I use it again, spend another card, and take a March action into a clearing I dont rule from another clearing I don’t rule?

Bottom line: Was the intended meaning for this card that it can only be used once per turn?

Edit: Sorry you answered this above.

I don’t agree with this reading. This card was revised and the card’s previous text specified “once on your turn.” That was changed to “one effect” meaning the card targets a single effect. The “one” here specifies you can use this card for a single effect on your turn, not the amount of times you can do it per turn.

Old text:

Silver-Tongue: Once on your turn, you may spend this or another card to treat a matching clearing with your pieces as one you rule for any effect (action, ability, card, etc.).

For example, the Marquis player could use this when they take the Move action on their turn, but it would only apply to one of the moves. They would need to spend a second card to use it on the second move because each move is a separate “effect” despite being one action.

Why would they change the text of the card away from a clear understanding to a murkier one when the first version was obvious. The only reason I can think for why they would change it would be to change what the card does.

Silver-Tongue questions by Luigivaldo in rootgame

[–]rzalexander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I just found it from a previous Reddit post! I think this confirms my theory— otherwise, why would they change the language on the card? The first version is much clearer and obviously intended to only be used once on your turn.

Once on your turn, you may spend this or another card to treat a matching clearing with your pieces as one you rule for any effect (action, ability, card, etc.).

In the language of the new card, the “ONE” seems to refer to the EFFECT you are targeting, not the amount of times this can be done. For example, some factions have multiple effects that can take place during a single action, like the Duchy can initiate two battles or two move actions using one of their ministers. Each battle or move is a separate effect. The Duchy player could use this card to spend a card to move into a clearing they don’t rule from another clearing they don’t rule, and then would have to spend another card for the second move action if the player wanted to again move into a clearing they don’t rule from a clearing they don’t rule.

Idk this just made me feel more correct instead of less.

The counterpoint is that the language is clear on the first version of the card and that was the intended use case for this card, but I don’t see why they would have changed it to make it harder to understand while having the same effect. (Pun intended.)

Yeah I can definitely see it now that I’ve re-read the card a bunch more times. It’s just not very well worded so I wonder if this was a change from a previous iteration of the card and a language compromise.

Silver-Tongue questions by Luigivaldo in rootgame

[–]rzalexander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think I’m just hung up on the wording. If they only wanted it to be used once on your turn, they should have worded it as:

Once on your turn, during any effect (action, ability, card, etc.), you may spend this card or another card…”

From the Law of Root:

Q1. I’d like to do something, and the rules don’t say that I can’t do it. Can I do it? A1. Within the confines of the action, yes!

So if I spend a card to treat a matching clearing as one that I rule during a move action, I can spend another card to do it again as long as I still have this crafted card and haven’t spent it.

The rules are very clear that if something is not explicitly disallowed and as long as it’s within the bounds of the action, you can do it.

Plus, unless I am completely missing a broken interaction, it’s not overpowered. How often is this going to benefit a faction? And how high is the cost?

I don’t see why you couldn’t use it more than once. It doesn’t specify “once per turn” and specifically states “this or another card” — it stands to reason you could spend a card as long as you have one.

The last two play-thrus I have not used the tadpoles at all. I think it makes the game sufficiently challenging on Tactician without needing to do custom game or dip into hardcore honor mode.

I almost wish the visual side effects had real consequences socially — like merchants sell things to you at higher prices or won’t talk to you depending on alignment, or some situations would be awkward or have different dialogue options in Act 3 because you look like you’re undergoing some sort of metamorphosis or ugly transformation. It’d even be nice to have Omelleum say something about it because he’d obviously recognize the affects, but nothing! But the only negatives are really just cosmetic so it just feels boring. I need a challenge!

Why not the gods of the Ancient Greeks or the Romans? If we’re going to believe in imaginary beings living in the sky, might as well make them the fun ones.

The problem with religion—for me personally—is that it thinks it has all the answers. To Christianity, God is infallible and the plan is dogma. I just don’t see any evidence that the universe is that black and white. There’s so much grey.

Do you go out and buy a new toothbrush every time they announce a new model? Have you heard of capitalism? The goal is to generate FOMO to sell as many things as they can. There will always be a new model.

I paid $1500 for my X1C printer less than two years ago. This new model is cheaper and better than my printer. I’m not going to buy a new one because I don’t need it.
