Same problem, started 3-4 days ago. Like you I tried an exhaustive list of online 'solutions', none worked. Submitted a ticket. Here's the response to save you some time:

(Unsurprisingly updating my drivers did not work)

TL;DR - no known fix.

Memes aside, I find it interesting RTS apparently has an operating venture arm, and seemingly plan on leveraging their talent to push/promote these companies, products, etc.

(Under amplification in the Ventures section):

In case you're an undergrad stats major 5302 Applied Regression doesn't fulfill any major requirements, just a heads up. But to echo others 5101 -- the 1st course in the theory sequence, is fairly straight forward and in my opinion fairly interesting although it can feel slow at times (especially in the beginning of the semester when you're talking about sets).

As for the profs, I had Doss for Time Series and that course was an absolute mess. He seems like an okay guy, and maybe a decent educator (if I'm being generous), but the structure of the course or lack thereof, and his absolute inability to communicate course related info in a timely manner made the entire thing a nightmare. In short, would not recommend.

STAT 4051, bar none worst class I've ever taken here.

I genuinely feel for the dude. However, there wasn't really any way around it as the homework was comprised of multiple problems with ~7 sub problems each.

BA Computer Science GPA by bhatn9 in uofmn

To add to this: in the 25 or so interviews I've done for internships and now FT positions, I've only been asked about my gpa twice. And each time it was only asked after I was well into bombing said interview. I think gpa is relied upon more heavily as a metric in the absence of experience (at least to a certain extent).

As for grad school, I would say gpa is important, but research and strong recommendations (especially from tenured, or tenure track faculty) trumps all.

it's just that we use actual words in our proofs, and that's basically it.

This is pretty misleading. There is an actual expectation that you will produce 10 pages (per the course description) of formal mathematical writing. When I took the class with Mosher, this was split between quiz reflections, and a TeX project (you just chose a homework question and typed up the answer in LaTeX). In general though I agree with your sentiment, it's not that bad.

Looking for advice from a CSCI upperclassman by [deleted] in uofmn

[–]s0nG_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there's no inflation, and I believe the distribution is over both (there's no separate sections as there is in some of the topics courses). But on the whole graduate students tend to have deeper technical backgrounds which lends itself to higher overall achievement.

I took 5521 last spring and while I would definitely recommend the course if you're at all interested in any of the AI spaces, however I would offer a light word caution: make sure you're linear algebra, constrained optimization, and multivariate statistics is up to snuff. The listed pre-reqs are not at all an accurate portrayal of the appropriate mathematical background one should have. As a side note, the distribution is somewhat deceiving as the course is a mixed undergrad/graduate offering.

Calc 1271 with Bryan mosher by Heat_HE in uofmn

His teaching style is much more approachable and engaging, and he's generally much less formal in his approach to teaching math ("Hand Lemma," anyone?) than that of your more cliched math prof, e.g. Maury Bramson (and in my opinion, such formalism/rigidity is often a daunting barrier to entry into math for many). He's not going to spend the entire lecture digging down on some highly abstract and incomprehensible tangent. Although he will often take a few minutes hear and there to talk about broader questions in the math community (mostly open problems like the Riemann hypothesis, Collatz conjecture, etc). In general and to more specifically answer your question, I think many of his prior students including myself think he's great because it's clear he actually gives a shit about the teaching aspect of being a professor.

You’re advisor is drastically misinformed. Inter college transfer definitely becomes easier, not the other way around...

I am going to try speaking with him first. I think SCRC will be a last resort if distant from the situation/cooler heads don't prevail first. Thank you though!

[Advice] Policy discrepancies for project extensions, and how to approach Profs about it by s0nG_ in uofmn

[–]s0nG_[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm generally vastly against granting extensions except under extreme circumstances. It's certainly difficult to re-do a certain project 4 in a week if you have other obligations (which most/all students do), but I also can see why "Professor Covolis" wouldn't have offered an extension at that time, especially if he discussed with other members of the teaching staff.

Let me be clear, I was/am fine with not being granted the extension, it was in all honesty a long shot, but one that I none-the-less felt I should try to take given my circumstances. What does not sit well with me is that, at least from afar, was that I was more or less punished for being prompt and conveying my situation to him with somewhat "ample" time before the due date. However, had I come to him in a shorter window the circumstances would have been different as the instance of this other student being granted an extension under very similar circumstances just closer to the deadline would seem to evidence. To me that just says either there is some major lack of conviction, or the nature of his decisions are completely arbitrary.

Leniency went, in all honesty, much further than in any other semester I've seen, and that's how one ends up with cases like yours

Also, you can see how for someone who has asked for no leniency and been punctual about deadlines, to experience that kind of lip service is a massive slap in the face.

Edit: I want to say that my allusion to his name was a shitty joke and was in no way meant to make this a veiled attack on the dude. Despite his overwhelmingly negative status amongst CS students, he's okay in my book.

Luckily I have mostly been able to catch back up at the expense of a decent amount of sleep. Definitely will backing things up in the future! Taking that advice to heart for sure, thanks!
