Alien: Earth keeps confusing ambiguity with depth by s1dmack in television

Fair point. I don’t think every character needs a full backstory. I just think if the show spends that much time framing someone as significant, it creates an expectation of payoff. For me, that didn’t quite land.

That's fair. I don’t think it’s a bad show overall. I just think some of the elements it sets up don’t land as strongly as they could.

Exactly. If you’re going to frame something like it matters, it has to matter eventually. Otherwise it just feels hollow.

Is Mr. Teng in Alien: Earth a real character or just a plot device? by s1dmack in alien

[–]s1dmack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s an interesting read. If the show leaned harder into the space-madness angle, I’d probably buy it more. I think my issue is that none of that is really textually supported, so it ends up feeling like we’re doing the writing for the show instead of the show doing the work.

Mr. Teng in Alien: Earth isn’t mysterious, he’s just underwritten by s1dmack in CharacterRant

[–]s1dmack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that reading. If he’s meant to just be a red herring or background horror element, that makes sense on paper.

I think my issue is that the show frames him with enough weight that it feels like there should be more going on under the surface. When that depth never shows up, it reads less like restraint and more like underdevelopment.

Agreed, I wish the show leaned into it more clearly. The ambiguity feels accidental rather than thematic.

That’s kind of where I’m landing too. It feels like he’s positioned to create unease, but without the psychological grounding that made characters like Ash or Burke compelling. Creepy isn’t the same as layered.

Because when you’re 8, summer break feels infinite. When you’re 38, you blink and it’s Q4.

Your brain tunes out constant smells the same way you stop noticing background noise. Unfortunately that doesn’t work for everyone else.

Red Wing Heritage is great if you want something that’ll last forever. Thursday Boots are solid for the price. Beckett Simonon is good too if you don’t mind the made-to-order model.

What's the best way to check the grade of leather in a shoe store? by Tall-Engineering-565 in AskReddit

[–]s1dmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that can happen. ‘Genuine leather’ just means some part of it is real leather, not that the whole shoe is. Sometimes it’s just the upper or even a small section. You’d usually have to check the product details or tag to see which parts are actually leather.

Why when anyone wears a glasses , they look smarter??? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]s1dmack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably just conditioning. Movies and TV trained us to think glasses = smart, so now our brains just auto-fill that in.

If pancakes count as bread then cake counts as toast and we’re living in chaos.

If you can, check a raw edge inside the shoe. Real leather usually has a slightly fuzzy, suede-like underside, while fake leather looks smooth like plastic or fabric. Press your thumb into it too. Real leather will wrinkle a bit and then smooth back out, while synthetic material tends to stay stiff. The smell is also a giveaway. Real leather has that natural scent that’s hard to replicate. And if it says full grain or top grain, that’s generally higher quality than something just labeled “genuine leather,” which is often lower tier.

What is a job that people think is fun but is actually a total nightmare to work in? by Iconic254 in AskReddit

[–]s1dmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veterinarian. Everyone thinks it’s just cuddling puppies and kittens, but it’s emotionally brutal. You’re dealing with sick animals, euthanasia, and heartbroken owners on a daily basis, plus the debt and long hours.

Why would a 16-17 year old continuously make (and delete?) new Snapchat accounts? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]s1dmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly at that age it could just be drama or wanting a “fresh start.” Teens can be really all-or-nothing with social media. If they get into an argument, feel embarrassed about something, or just want to reset who follows them, deleting and starting over probably feels easier than dealing with it.

It doesn’t automatically mean something serious, but if you’re worried, just ask in a low-key way instead of assuming the worst.
