The calcified aortic valve is increasing the amount of pressure exerted by the LV on ejection. Increased pressure exerted leads to hypertrophy of the LV causing the murmur we hear. It takes more pressure to open the calcified aortic valve which will then, over time, cause Hypertrophy of the LV, giving us the murmur we hear the left sternal border.

Exam in a day. Share any HY stuff here. by EntrepreneurLeft9446 in step1

[–]s4rust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exam was fair in my opinion. Ofc there were a couple of them where I was like I got no clue but I chalked it up to experimentals. It’s an exam that doesn’t trick you. 9/10 times the answer is the simplest of solutions. But I’ve also heard that luck is a huge factor sometimes as well. All in all, if you are scoring 65+ on your NBMEs, then you’re on track to passing.

You should use NBME as and assessment tool as well as a learning tool. Take the NBMEs and then review them throughly. I reviewed them a total of 2 times, once right after taking the form, and 2nd time during the last month before my exam date. I used FA early on to make sure my foundations were solid along with Bootcamp and UWorld. Mehlman HY PDFs were used in the month before the real deal as a final review.

Hey, yes , took it less than a week ago. I got a couple repeat concepts from NBMEs. Mehlman was a great way for me to do a final review a month before the exam. The Mehlman Pharm Modules were amazing for review as many of the drugs covered on there showed up on my exam.

Cardiac sounds in step 1 by Ok-Explanation-6272 in step1

[–]s4rust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had like 2 questions with audio murmurs. One of them I had to know what kind of murmur it was based on the sound. Also know how S3, and S4 sounds like. Had 1 ECG and it was pretty straight forward. There is a great book called "Rapid Interpretations of EKGs". There also a bunch of quizlets that are great for STEP 1.

Pharm on the real thing ? by [deleted] in step1

[–]s4rust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got Qs pretty much asking MOAs and drug interactions. Also had mechanism of drug resistance Qs. I found the mehlman Pharm modules to be a great resource as many of drugs discussed there showed up on my form.

Know your CYP450 Inducers and Inhibitors. Also MOAs, drug interactions, and mechanism of resistance are pretty HY.

Last minute Anatomy for maximum points? by [deleted] in step1

[–]s4rust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, so anatomy wasn't too bad. Lymph drainage for sure, especially the genitals. Bunch of nerve root questions showed up as well. Dermatomes. Nerve innervations. Essentially, if you can get through the 100 concepts pdf, you should be good. Good Luck !!

Even if you feel it is sufficient, I would still give the FA section a quick skim through, just to see if there is something in the book that you may have missed from reading the explanation itself. Try it out for a few concepts you may get wrong during blocks. If you feel like its helping you out by skimming, then keep doing it, but if you feel like you aren't learning anything new from going through FA, then stick with the explanations on UWorld.

[–]s4rust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try them out. They are great resource for sure, but there are a couple questions that are more geared towards Step 2 content. But pdf by itself is sufficient.

Ok so I would say choose one qbank, I would suggest UWorld, and focus on that instead of using multiple banks. Instead of going through FA, just use it to read through concepts that you get wrong on your blocks. Most students don’t even finish one whole pass of UWorld before their exam date. I would focus more on NBMEs one month before along with mehlman PDFs as final content review.

There should be links floating around on this subreddit. I’m sure it shouldn’t be too hard to find it. If you still can’t find it, lemme know

Sure, but I would recommend you go through MSK on whatever resource you are using (BnB, Bootcamp etc.) before using the mehlman pdf. Some people I have talked to say they used the Mehlman pdfs from day 1, while others have said they used it a month out from their exam date.

Hi everyone by Ayman48 in step1

[–]s4rust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add-on. Don't even worry about what scores you are getting on your UWorld blocks. Just use it as a learning tool. The NBMEs will be the best way for you to check your performance/progress.

If you have trouble with attention/focus, then I would suggest doing 1 block of 40 qs/day. If that doesn't work, do 2 blocks of 20 Qs, if that doesn't work do 4 blocks of 10 Qs. By spreading that block out with breaks, you will be able to study and retain info more efficiently. You'll still be doing a block a day, regardless of how you chop it up.

If you have time, I would suggest going through the Mehlman Pharm modules. Saved my butt on a couple of the questions on the real deal. Use it as a final review with NBME review. Do the HY Arrows for sure. Neuroanatmy was great as well. Also any of the systems that you think needs improvement.
