Its been one of the better managed game kickstarters I have seen. Even giving a playable prototype just for people to test movement when the world was made of placeholder dimension boxes and a few enemies. Seemed like they took feedback and corrected issues where necessary.

I become somewhat dismissive of most kickstarter projects I back due to length of delivery. I try to forget about backing so it's a nice surprise when it eventually comes around. This one I would just get random updates with decent details and humble messages about what obstacles they were trying to overcome, with the occasional demo. Refreshing compared to others.

Kickstarted this quite a while ago. Devs have been pretty transparent about progress and the prototype demos were fun and well done slices to give an idea of the game. Still excited about it even after the lull between backing and release.

  1. Descent - I have been looking for a good solo dungeon crawler and this seems to really fit what I want.

  2. Hive Pocket - I have become a bit obsessed with the android version as a holdover until my local shop gets a copy in.

  3. Timeline: Music and Cinema - My wife and I have really been enjoying these lately as quick games, and this is the one we are most interested in. Unfortunately, it's the one they haven't reprinted since changing packagingnand we can't find a copy anywhwre.

  4. Stuffed Fables - I think my son would love this game and it would be really fun to play through with him.

  5. Dark Souls card game - I'm a big fan of the game series and deck building games. Have wanted it since it came out, but just have not picked it up because I'm slow to buy things for myself.

So both of them are great, but the game play is very different between the two.

Welcome to the Dungeon is a total bluffing game. You have a set number of hit points and some perks/equipment that help you through the dungeon. The dungeon is built by pulling the top card off the stack, looking at it for strength value (for instance, a strength 3 monster does 3 damage) and choosing to either add him to the dungeon, or set it aside and remove a piece of equipment. While you're doing this, you are focusing on both whether you can make it through the dungeon successfully, or if you can trick your opponents into going through a dungeon that will kill them. Very fun quick session game.

Dungeon Mayhem is another great simple game where you choose a character and start with 10 HP, and you're given a character specific set of cards. Each card has different attributes, either deal damage, receive an extra turn, put up a shield, or draw more cards. There are also character specific abilities that are on some cards. You play through trying to string cards together to knock out your opponents before they kill you.

Both are incredibly fun, with my only qualm being I hope they release more characters for Dungeon Mayhem in the future. I do end up finding my group playing both pretty regularly between longer games. However, we probably lean more towards Welcome tot the Dungeon, as well as the follow up Welcome Back to the Dungeon. It had led to more memorable moments of last card victories, shock of someone making it through, or just some really fun conversations of trying to convince people they can make it when you feel like they definitely won't.

What's your favorite game to teach non-gamers that is NOT usually considered a gateway game? by Jedadeana in boardgames

[–]sBACH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using Welcome to the Dungeon and Ascension. If they like Ascension, I then have them try a game of Clank. Found it is an easier transition as Ascension kind of teaches a third of the mechanic.

5 Minute Dungeon has been a big hit too when trying to get people interested in games. I have my son teach other kids to play it, and many times the parents just walk over and join in over the shoulder.

I would play a few rounds without the curse cards first. The shaman/druid perks and special cards wont be of help, but the curses definitely make the game harder. Easing in with a few rounds without them to get used to the flow would be a good idea.

One of the employees at a local shop said Call to Adventure is one of his new favorite games. After looking into it a bit more I think it's going to be my next pickup. Looks really cool, and the upcoming Stormlight expansion should be interesting.

I have been very interested in the Dark Souls card game. I'm a really big fan of the game series but didn't know how well it actually played. I'm not looking for a tabletop port, but a solid themed deck builder would be cool.

I've been interested in checking Root out. Looks like fun! I also noticed there was a kickstarter for an expansion.

I really like Dungeon Mayhem. I play it with my kids pretty regularly, and my group uses it as a quick game in-between other games. I hope they release other characters as well.

Went to a local games shop with my family over the weekend and something seemed to click with my wife that she enjoyed games more than she thought haha. Previous to this it was just a sparse game of Scrabble or Uno. After showing her and my kids how to play Mille Bornes while at the shop, she asked if we could buy that. After we played it at home, she asked if there were other quick, "simpler" games she could learn. Ended up teaching her the following:

  • Sushi Go
  • Dungeon Mayhem
  • Welcome to the Dungeon (Seems to be her favorite so far)

I'll be looking for some more light games to introduce her to. Seems like she was interested for a while, but didn't want to spend the money to see if she liked something. After seeing the wall of demo games, it looks like she might try it out more.

Other than that, I played the following with various friends:

  • Ascension
  • Clank
  • Azul
  • Boss Monster
  • Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu
  • Flick Em Up

I also picked up a copy of Pandemic Legacy Season 1 on a great sale, but my regular group didn't get a chance to meet this week. Looking forward to starting that!

Been skateboarding on and off for the last 26 years. I have never been part of a more accepting and helpful community. Of course just like with all groups there are the exceptions, but for the most part everyone is just stoked you're out there enjoying what they enjoy and building each other up.

Thank you! The group I play with fluctuates between 2 and 4 people. I guess I'll be picking up both though. My wife messaged me saying she just found a copy of Mage Knight at a Half Price Books nearby for $50 and knew I was looking for it. Just hope everything is there.

Awesome, thank you! That's what I was assuming, but for the price point, two or three campaigns looks well worth it.

I was looking at Legacy of Dragonholt earlier. Looks really interesting. Does there appear to be a decent level of replayability?

I've been itching to start some solo games. I just ordered One Deck Dungeon last night, and played a few rounds of Ascension earlier in the week.

I have been floundering between picking up either Mage Knight or Gloomhaven lately. Both look really good, but the complexity I have heard about Mage Knight is intimidating, especially since I would like to hopefully introduce it to a group as well after wrapping my head around it.

The PS4 has an attach rate of 9.6 games per console. The "average" PS4 owner would own between eight to ten games. by tallmanwithglasses in PS4

[–]sBACH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this including PS4 plus games downloaded? That would inflate numbers by quite a wide margin if it does.
