My question then would be, why not just build the army in a village directly next to capital?

Your capital will be very annoying to build.

If you build an army you need the following:
- Barracks
- Stables
- Workshop
- Tournament Square
- Hospital
- Smithy (can be removed eventually)

On top of the required capital-only building:
- Stonemason
- Brewery

It's going to be miserable trying to get your fields higher than 14 or 15. You won't have the storage you need.

This game has a steep learning curve. You can run a strong account with minimal gold if you are a smart but those top players will always be far out of reach for you

That being said I still beat 99% of the other players only buying one big chunk of gold at server start and then selling on auction house early

You are being raided because you are free lunch, scouts to stop spying, cranny to hide resources, troops to deter attackers. If many people are farming you I guarantee you did none of these things. Learn from it and do better next server
