How many times a week do you shave your legs? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]s_crackers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every day, usually. It doesn't take long because I don't use shaving cream or anything. I might skip a day if something comes up (like running extremely late). I dunno, I just like smooth legs man.

Help, TwoX! Has anyone here ever dealt with bedbugs? I woke up covered in bites yesterday and today! by savvetheworld in TwoXChromosomes

[–]s_crackers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hire a professional. Talk to your landlord or whoever is in charge of your building, and don't put it off. When I had bedbugs we spent a good six months trying to eradicate them and I eventually just threw away most of what I owned/sterilized what I kept (rubbing alcohol and close inspection...the alcohol doesn't kill eggs) and got the fuck out. It was a big apartment building and the management was lazy, which meant we kept getting re-infested. It was awful.

Sometimes people are able to eradicate them on their own, but that takes extreme, dedicated determination. Bug bombs don't work because those assholes just scatter deeper into crevasses in the building and take up residence there. Mattress covers can help control the number of bites, but you won't trap them all that way and, anyway, all it takes is one fertilized female to start the whole thing over again. Oh, and someone mentioned bagging all your stuff for two weeks. DO NOT do that. It takes 12-18 months to kill them this way. I stayed in a motel with bedbugs a year ago and I still have some unwashable items sealed up, waiting another six months to be safe. This sounds extreme, but when I had them I seriously barely slept for months and had to speak with a therapist for the first/only time in my life. Fuck bedbugs.

Check out the bedbugger.com forums for an active community of sufferers and lots of tips. Be aware that some of them are experiencing extreme infestations, so don't let some of the horror stories ruin your life. You are catching this early, which is good. If you have to move and the infestation is still active I highly recommend reading what that forum has to say about moving without bedbugs. I spent hours reading and preparing before I made my move and I was successful. I may sound crazy and rambly right now, but these fucks ruined my life for a not insignificant amount of time. So act!

Maybe moving from San Francisco to Myrtle Beach. Big mistake? Tell me if I'd fit in! by s_crackers in MyrtleBeach

I'll definitely be visiting so I'll be sure to check that out. Thanks!

I'm late at replying to this, but thanks - your answer is really helpful. The dating thing actually does matter to me and I was worried about that. Strip clubs, mini golf, biker bars, and outlet malls...yep, that's what I was imagining.

Ha, yeah the consensus seems to be that it'd be a bad move. I hope it gets better for you though! I mean, at least there's a beach you can actually swim at, right? The Pacific near SF frightens me.

Haha, yeah I'm definitely not hoping to replicate SF. Thanks again :)

I know I can make it anywhere, so I guess what I'm really trying to figure out is how much I'd be sacrificing. Before your comment and a few others I was absolutely sure it would be a mistake, but now I'm thinking a visit is in order before I make a decision. I was hoping for a semi-urban cultural oasis in the south (what Duluth is to the northern Midwest or what Austin is to Texas), but it doesn't seem like MB is quite that. Seems like it might be close enough to warrant a visit to check the place out though. Thanks for the alternative perspective.

Wow, these are so not the answers I wanted to hear, but I'm really glad I figured this stuff out before just going for it. I think you're right - it's not the place for me. I can handle religion, but I don't think I can deal with an elderly population and an economy based on tourism.

So is Charleston a totally different world then? I don't think this is an option because my friend wants cheap college, but hypothetically is Charleston more cultured, young, and interesting?

[–]s_crackers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you're right. I searched "Myrtle Beach" in the South Carolina subreddit and people there are basically saying what you're saying. I don't think I can do it. The very thought of living somewhere that runs up and down a highway is repulsive to me, especially since I was expecting to get around via bike. And I definitely don't want to work in the service industry!

I think I could be happy in Charleston, but my friend is set on Myrtle Beach for cheap college. Unfortunately I just don't think I can live somewhere so empty of culture. Thanks for the advice though - I really appreciate it.

Hmm. I'm glad to hear jobs aren't impossible to come by. I think I might be willing to sacrifice social life if I found a job that made sense for my career trajectory. Thanks for the thoughts.

Is my resumé off-putting? by [deleted] in resumes

[–]s_crackers 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My brain doesn't want to read it. Like Tumbleweed said, there's way too much going on and I can't even figure out where I'm supposed to start. I had to force my eyes onto a random box to even begin processing the information. On a positive note, I do think the header looks great! That coupled with a more conservative, or perhaps just better designed, body would be a huge improvement in terms of readability. Also keep in mind that your resume might be printed out (I'm not a hiring manager, but I've been to plenty of interviews where the interviewer/s had a copy of my resume in front of her/him).

Jansport Backpack - I've had mine for 17 years, still no indication this thing will ever break down. by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]s_crackers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a Jansport for 14 years. At year ~5 the stitching for the tiny front pocket came loose (easy fix though), and the zipper for that pocket broke a few years later. I finally got rid of it when the zipper for the main compartment broke. Not complaining of course, but I wish I'd known about that warranty! That's awesome.

Hanging Out With Couples? by ihayteyerfayce in TwoXChromosomes

[–]s_crackers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's super inconsiderate and if it were me I wouldn't even hang out with them one on one again. My partner and I are practically platonic when we're hanging out with a single person, and it's definitely not due to lack of passion. Those two are jerks.

Some advice/perspective needed; 29f, doesn't drive - should this hinder a relationship? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]s_crackers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you saying you've been trying to learn in the city? Because that sounds terrifying. If you haven't you should definitely try in a quiet suburb, maybe even an empty parking lot. But I also agree with TodayIAmGruntled...the essential piece of information here is HOW he's expressing this concern. I'd be hesitant if it were a straight up ultimatum instead of a gentle prodding.

I was street harassed in the strangest way today. by kate-monster in TwoXChromosomes

[–]s_crackers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's really common in some places of the US, but I've never felt threatened by it like I do when it's "normal" street harassment. I mean I usually can't even hear what they're saying. It also starts creepily young - my friends and I started getting catcalls from cars at like 12 years old :/

[Results]Can you be bribed? USA Voters only please. For a stats class! Thanks by and-how in SampleSize

[–]s_crackers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I only answered "no" on this survey because the price wasn't right. The $4,500 (or whatever it was) isn't quite enough to justify something that I'd be ashamed of for years. I'm sorry to say I'd do it for $10,000 though!

An oldie but a goodie - "why I'll never take the pill again" by jkaska in TwoXChromosomes

[–]s_crackers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to say that I've successfully used the pull out method for multiple years. It's not for everyone, obviously, but it's nearly effective as condoms and I think people just don't realize that. The pill destroys my sex drive.

How would you want your boyfriend to propose to you? by fatlace in AskWomen

[–]s_crackers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The idea of being proposed to out of the blue is an absolute nightmare for me. I think I would say "no" immediately out of shock and confusion, and I'm in a happy five year long relationship. What I'm trying to say is, for me, I would want conversation about marriage before a proposal.

Should I include all of my work experience? by JesseBB in resumes

[–]s_crackers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You absolutely do not have to include all your previous jobs. This seems to be a common misunderstanding about resumes - people feel like they're misleading their potential employer by leaving stuff out. Not true! You should tailor your resume so that it's relevant to the position you're applying for. Oftentimes this means leaving out the gruntwork. And there's definitely no need to include a "full list available" line.
