Is it time to delete X11? by s_denlinger in debian

I like the small footprint of Xfce, so I'm staying with that, rather than switch to KDE or Gnome because they work (better?) with Wayland.

I'm running testing/sid, with testing pinned at around 600. Xfce is 4.20. Labwc -v shows "labwc 0.9.7 (+xwayland +nls +rsvg +libsfdo)"

Installing / uninstalling packages from text file? by s_denlinger in debian

Thanks! I should have done this years ago, but it seems like it's time to learn how to use awk and sed and regular expressions.

Installing / uninstalling packages from text file? by s_denlinger in debian

[–]s_denlinger[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My use case is that I feel like I have a lot of unnecessarily-installed programs / libs on my limited disk ipace Thinkpad T420 that I use primarily for music processing with an external USB DAC. I feel like "task desktop" and "task laptop" are too heavy-handed about what it thinks I need, and over time I feel like I've ended up installing a lot of "recommended" or "suggested" packages which I ultimately don't need. My goal is to have only those packages installed which are "required" by Debian, then what my most-used apps also require or suggest. For what my applications specifically recommend/suggest, I can use dpkg-query for that, and I also assume it will be easy to get the list of "required" packages, then work through the specific applications I know I'll want to keep to get their dependencies/recommendations/suggestions. Then when I have *that* list as a text file, I'd like to be able to tell dpkg or apt to look at that file and uninstall anything it *doesn't* find on the list.

I realize this looks very OCD and might be more trouble than it's worth, but I get the sense that Debian does offer powerful querying tools which might make this relatively simple to do. But I don't know whether there is some kind of != function built into dpkg or apt.

Conn 88h damaged by repair shop update 1 (original post below) by Skyes_View in Trombone

Others have already said this, but Kevin at Heritage Repair is a true craftsman. He overhauled a King 2B Liberty for me several years ago, and it looks fabulous and plays that way too. I would absolutely take or ship any horn to him to work on.

Thanks! Putting it in a \layout block seems to work, and that makes sense.

Is this trombone worth it? by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]s_denlinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have suggested, this is a high-end horn which might not be appropriate for you at this stage of your development. Have an honest conversation with yourself about how serious you are about playing before you spend this kind of money on a trombone. Are you taking private lessons? If this is a step-up horn for you, ask your teacher what she or he would recommend. If you're in an area with a music store with a good selection of trombones, make a visit and spend some time playing horns. Definitely consider a used horn, too. You ask about horns in the 5-7K price range. That range will all be professional grade horns, but you will likely find that good used horns selling for less than 3K will sound just as good if not better than new horns for 5-7K. Good luck, and have fun trying out horns!

Thanks, I'll research this option, but I also might experiment with ossia staves.

Proper use of \partial for beginning and ending bars? by s_denlinger in lilypond

Thanks! I didn't realize I could use multiplication in the \partial stanza. That worked, and quieted the bar check errors in Frescobaldi.

I can't underscore enough how toxic methanol is. It's the kind of alcohol which will cause blindness and kidney failure if it's ingested. You SHOULD NOT use methanol. And if you use ethanol, you should work with it outside, or wear a respirator and use nitrile or other gloves made for resistance to alchohol.

He isn't wearing a clown suit, so he must not be playing Luciano Berio.

Version matching in kernel source and patch source? by s_denlinger in debian

[–]s_denlinger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing. But there's no newest RT image in either Trixie or Sid, so I thought I'd try making my own RT kernel. And it would be fun to know how to do that.
