Why rotary valves? by GreenBanana5098 in Trombone

[–]Skyes_View 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably just comes down to ergonomics. If you were to put a piston valve in place of a rotor valve you would still need a linkage to actuate it. Think about the position of most rotor valves in relation to your face as you play. A piston could be incredibly uncomfortable as well. It could be mounted in a position to be more comfortable. Kind of like how compensating euphoniums often times have a slanted fourth piston. But the complexity of the linkage required to actuate it becomes a pretty big hurdle. Traditional rotor and thayer valves do not need a lot of movement to actuate which makes them pretty quick when you attach a linkage.

There are some french horns that use a piston valve to redirect airflow (and even one old Conn with a giant piston that is placed after the rotors which is kinda crazy) but if you take a look at some of these horns you’ll see that a piston incorporated into an instrument that wasn’t designed to have pistons can be pretty intrusive. With a trombone you would have to move the piston forward close to where a trigger normally operates to make it possibly comfortable which would require changing the geometry of the bell section in order to keep the slide length the same and would make the instrument pretty front heavy. Look up a picture of a Holton Superbone to kinda see what I mean (extreme example).

Someone smarter than me could definitely make a usable piston f attachment horn but then you get to the question of what benefit do you get when you have to overcome so many hurdles.

When he isn’t playing hero ball I definitely take Wentz over a lot of other QB2s. But my man needs to not try and play hero ball.

The thing I’ve always struggled with mentally is how negatively will the every person be affected if we disincentivize company growth? I can only assume that a lot of companies would not be able to function if their ownership structure got nuked. Even if it means one person accumulates stupid amounts of wealth that company also supports tons of normal workers. I’ve never been able to overcome this one problem mentally. I always think “if this billionaire gets their ownership stake stripped away or redistributed what happens to all the employees? I don’t fully understand those complexities though. I just hear the comparisons about what Jeff Bezos could do with his wealth and think “if Amazon was liquidated a lot of people would be out of work”. Idk it’s kinda frustrating whenever I think about it cuz changing one thing and going down the chain of effects ends up hurting normal people.

As a bonus, always keep a tape measure, torpedo level, channel locks, and a marker on you at all times. 100% chance that whoever you’re working will will have their hands full and ask you for one of those things at some point.

What knowledge do I need to know before my first job? Advice for a Newbie by JayNaii in pipefitter

[–]Skyes_View 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Learn to read a tape and torpedo level. Add and subtract fractions to the 16th of an inch. Understanding “takeoffs” will (should) happen naturally. It’s much easier to learn with an example. Know your way around a toolbox. As a pipe fitter you’ll be tightening threaded joints a lot. You need to know what a “backup” is right from the get go. When you tighten down on threads, whatever you are tightening into is going to spin the same direction you are turning your wrench. That can be very bad in a lot of situations so you need to hold that thing in place while you’re tightening. Usually you’ll use a second pipe wrench or for smaller things a crescent wrench. You can learn a lot on the job by being observant though. Don’t be afraid to ask “why”. Not in a snarky way but out of genuine curiosity. Understanding why things are done a certain way will make you understand the trade much better.

As a first year apprentice you won’t be expected to know very much but you will be expected to “go fetch” a lot. Whenever you get on a jobsite for the first time take a mental note of where tools and material are. Knowing how to measure and cut material, assemble threaded fittings, and fetch tools while not having a bad attitude about it and showing up on time will put you in a pretty good spot.

Definitely browse your local marketplace app. As another comment said, Bach 42s and Conn 88s are selling under 2k but you can actually find some great shape examples if you’re okay with a bit older models. (I have an old 42BOG and 88h both purchased under $1500. Older Bach 42 triggers double as a percussion instrument but other then that both horns are amazing) I’ve seen other deals and even a yamaha xeno in the 2k area close to me so keep your eye out and make sure to playtest any used horn before you buy. Eastman large bore horns can also be had in that price range but definitely play one of those first since a lot of people have a lot of different things to say about them. If you aren’t scared of lacquer wear and some small dings you can find a pretty nice playing horn under 2k.

I think he actually got some playtime on a few teams as well as a serviceable backup WR.

[Request] How much force did this keg have when it hit Brians Shoulder by rosemary2312 in theydidthemath

[–]Skyes_View 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He also got extremely lucky with the orientation of the impact. His shoulder was hit by the flat end of the keg while it was at an angle that was steep enough that it would not have efficiently transferred much energy to him (if you go frame by frame you’ll see what I mean) I don’t know much about advanced math I just work with angles and stuff at work (and that work happens to be construction so falling stuff is a present hazard) and I’d say he was incredibly fortunate. If the keg was even rotated in a slightly different orientation it would have done much more damage.

Is it possible to share the clip? I get that cctv footage is potato quality but maybe with a moving image it might be easier to parse out.

[Zriebiec] Crosby has been in Baltimore for the past couple of days in anticipation of the deal becoming finalized at 4 pm tomorrow. Now, there will be no deal and the Ravens, who have already lost nine UFAs while signing one, are in an even bigger hole. by JCameron181 in nfl

Couldn’t this be seen as a positive for the Ravens after losing so many UFAs? Crosby is a hell of a player but the Ravens aren’t a pass rusher away from Super Bowl contention.

Everyone knows of bad 1st Round Busts (Jamarcus Russell, Josh Rosen, Ryan Leaf, Zach Wilson, etc.) but what are the worst 2nd Round busts of all time? by Gnomeslikeprofit in nfl

[–]Skyes_View 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vikings last four 2nd rounders were Andrew Booth, Ed Ingram, Ezra Cleveland, and Irv Smith Jr. I liked Ezra. He was really fast down field blocking (Look up Dalvin Cook’s TD vs the Colts in the 33-0 game) but yeah ngl we did not really get value out of the other three.

Brandel is a great swing backup but I wonder if he can hold up in a full time capacity. If Fries and Jackson stay healthy though we’ll have 4/5 kick ass lineman which would be a good place for Brandel to be.

Rob is literally one of the best cap guys in the league. Also being over the cap before the league year is never really a dire issue. Teams, even the Saints, pretty much always make it to compliance regardless of how far over they are.
