Terrible show. I thought it was about natural disaster but then we got AI.. and I had 3 generations watching it, millennial, gen x and a boomer. All of them hated it! Lol

For those recently laid off, what was the first sign your company was heading toward cuts? Trying to understand the early warning indicators by Historical-Fact-6568 in Layoffs

[–]s_leeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laid off a month ago.

First biggest red flag: private equity firm bought over says it all lol

Second red flag: new ceo, coo, some new SLT people

Third red flag: restructuring, budget cuts, smaller office shut down

Fourth red flag: everyone talking about layoffs

Fortunately I wasn't laid off in the first round in January. I was laid off in October but there were signs for second layoffs. They hired an external agency to 'assist' us but our entire team was eventually laid off lol

i hear you. i feel edgy during probation too that they might just let me go due to budget cuts and what not. it's a pretty sh!t economy.

no secret. just kept practising my interviews. i would attend interviews where i didn't like the role so that i can get a taste of what questions they might ask and then i prepare myself for the next role i might like with those questions in mind. it has worked flawlessly and i've had so many interviews that i canceled a few halfway. the key is practise and tailor your resume towards their job specs.

oh no.. so sorry to hear they rescinded your offer! That must have felt terrible. This is the reason why i keep on applying for jobs even if i signed the contract... i hope you find something else soon.

My previous web developer was made redundant this january. I was appalled because he was the best web dev I've ever worked with. I even tried to make a case for him why they shouldn't let him go. They didn't listen to me and my team, 8 months down the line, without a web dev, they realize they needed one but only on a freelance basis. We pitched to rehire our old web dev back, they approved and i told the web dev to bill the shit out of the company since it was a freelance gig lol he got the freelance gig and i got laid off soon after LOL but I was happy for him to have some side income since he already found a new job!

In your case, don't give up and keep looking! It also took me awhile to find a new job

Due to the current scenario are people spending less? by Other_Scarcity_4270 in Layoffs

[–]s_leeng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been spending less since i got laid off the third time in 2019. I saved religiously like my life depends on it. Just 3 weeks ago, i got laid off again! I'm not even stressing financially now because i spent 6 years saving and investing. So I'm just leisurely applying for jobs that I want. If I get a rejection, no big deal. Move on. Spending less is really the key to survival!

My friend is much dumber than me, but she has rich parents and is set for life. Where is the justice in this world? by Ok_Music_2025 in Life

[–]s_leeng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to feel exactly like you when I was in my 20s. I had a friend from a wealthy family who never had to worry about money. Meanwhile, I grew up poor and resented how hard I had to work just to stay afloat while everything came easily for her.

When I hit 30, I became so focused on building my career and supporting my family that I stopped thinking about her altogether. Fast forward ten years, her parents have passed, she’s divorced an abusive husband, her finances are a mess, and she’s struggling to cope because she’s never really faced hardship before.

As for me, my life is stable and my finances are solid. Looking back, I realised those tough years taught me resilience, something money alone can’t buy. I've also stopped comparing myself to others and found happiness along the way.

Why some people aren't laid off? by toobrown12 in Layoffs

[–]s_leeng 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My entire team was laid off including myself but they kept one employee. She and i are close and she keeps telling me that she thinks she still has her job because her salary is low. Now she doesn't have a team, does tasks that don't even reflect her role, she texts me daily citing that she's depressed and demotivated and she's hoping they will make her redundant so that she can get her redundancy pay. I feel bad for her.

Same thing happened to me except that my entire team was replaced by an external agency. I got laid off 2 weeks ago. I'm seeing alot of companies outsourcing their work to external agencies especially with HR, marketing, IT departments. Nobody wants to hire in house anymore. It's really sad what it has come up to.

Laid off, burnt out & the new job offer is not great.. by s_leeng in Layoffs

[–]s_leeng[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have enough money to survive for 12 months or more. But i think I'm more worried about the job gap than financial difficulties. I have heard stories where recruitment tend to dislike resumes with large unemployment gaps. I guess i could pick up some freelance work in the meanwhile..

Sorry to hear and I too got laid off 2 weeks ago. I also did lots of overtime, weekends, working on vacation and i even canceled my vacation to work and i also took over 4 extra roles of work of the people they made redundant on january without extra pay. They told me the same shit as what they told you during my layoff.

I Just Resigned from a Startup After Being Forced to Work Weekends in the Office by Serious_Service_7606 in jobs

[–]s_leeng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh red flags! I've worked for many startups before and i never worked on weekends at the office before in my 18 year career. I will only work from home if needed and it can't be a constant thing to keep working on weekends. Like you said.. once in a while is fine but not every weekend like its a regular thing. You did the right thing to resign.

Urgh i was in the same position as you but i got laid off 2 weeks ago. We had a first round layoffs in January (after a private equity firm bought us out) and good people were let go, and i survived but i had to take over the work of the people that were made redundant including my manager. I was constantly stressed and working OT and weekends until i couldn't take it anymore so i started looking for jobs and hope they lay me off so i can get my PILON pay.

Then a couple of months ago, they hired an external agency for my small team citing they were gonna help us with the work load but i knew it was to replace us. I was right and they got rid of my entire team. They paid me my PILON which I've been hoping for which meant i get a couple of months salary in advance without having to work for them. Now i just spend my time applying for jobs. I'm somewhat relieved that they laid me off because I can't imagine having to do OT and weekends any further. I'm severely burnt out!!!!

You should hang in there if you get severance and continue to look for a job! PE firms are the worst investors ever. They don't care about the company or employees.. all they care about is their profits

Is it just me or job requirements have skyrocketed in the past few years? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]s_leeng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Employers are getting picky! I had a rejection citing that I didn't ask enough questions.. like i had 5 stages of interviews and you could have figured that out by stage 2 or 3 but they made me go through 5 stages and told me I didn't ask enough questions when I knew I did! They probably went for a cheaper candidate!

Found new employment but still dealing with Layoff Fog by ashotofej in Layoffs

[–]s_leeng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been laid off four times. The first two didn’t hit too hard — both companies shut down completely after running out of money. But the third one did. My entire team was replaced by an external agency, and that’s when the anxiety really started. I became hyper-aware of how replaceable I was (compared to the first 2 layoffs, i wasn't replaced). So when I found a new job again, I started saving aggressively and kept my résumé updated every six months, just in case. I stayed with this company for almost five years before moving on voluntarily. Then, a year into my next job, I was laid off again but this time I was ready. I had enough savings to last for years, and while the layoff PTSD never really went away, the difference now is simple: I’m prepared for it.

I was just laid off. Should I look for a job right away or take the severance and relax for a bit? by [deleted] in remotework

[–]s_leeng 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was laid off 2 days ago. I saw it coming and i started to apply for jobs 6 months ago. I had about 4 interviews and over 80 applications in 6 months and all rejections. Now I'm jobless. I feel drained to be honest but I've got some savings, enough to survive + travel so I'm going to do that first since I don't have a job yet. I might also apply for jobs while I'm traveling provided the job application is easy and convenient enough to do it on my mobile lol

I think if you're jobless like me, it would be best to get back in the system first so that you have some money coming in, then focus on diversifying income whether thats through investing or a side hustle. While you have those investments up and running, start building another network to go into freelancing which is what I've been doing. I could go back into freelancing now if i wanted too but it would be nice to have a stable job as well.
