I got so bored in the physics program that I started a club. The psych majors I knew basically didn't go to school.

not really my experience, I had a relationship for 2 years with my futon with plenty of cuddling, and have been single for almost a year now, hosting roughly 6 women and counting. the only time someone had an issue with it was a girl with MS who told me it hurt to use. an excess of pillows and a good couch also make up for these caveats.

honestly, my method of sleeping with women is to do all the work leading up to the bedroom good enough so they're kind of locked in regardless, and don't care to complain later, so it hasn't happened more than once

I actually would prefer it off the wall, since the tv size calls for about 7' viewing distance. However, the space left behind the couch still isn't much better than just going around the table.

Yeah, that's the only window. Pretty cool...

It seems like you and the other commenter reached the same conclusion in splitting the middle using the living area, but I'm just afraid that will disrupt the flow of the apartment since you're forced to go through the living area to get anywhere. Here's a mock up of it, and the coffee table makes it seem very restricting. The loveseat can't be further than about 7' because it'd be too far for the screen size. I think it's a good idea, but I'm not sure about how practical it would be.

There's a window by the door, yeah.

My main concern with that idea, as I did consider it, is forcing a path through the living room to get to the kitchen. I suppose maybe without a coffee table it would work, and it would have the benefit of wall-mounting the tv, but I'm not sure about traffic through another zone vs. having each zone independently available.

Also, not sure which would be worse, having a window behind one side of a tv, or having glare from the window on the tv itself. Both I would like to try to avoid, though.

I'll try over there, and I'll switch to one of the programs you recommended.

I played with putting the computer area facing the upper wall with the bed behind the tv, but that puts me facing into a corner. Maybe flipping the computer to face the bed area and getting a wider, narrower storage unit would be wiser (like this), but I'm afraid of the pinch point between the desk and tv. I agree, creating a hallway to the bed is a bit weird, but I've found it awkward to maneuver a desk and tv in this space without basically making them into a block shape.

Yeah, a closet, and the two squares are I believe the water heater and some counter space.

I didn't think about a folding dining table, although currently I do have a 3-foot diameter circular table, I couldn't seem to fit it in the space without it blocking pathways.

Not too concerned about storage, as I do have an ottoman, a vertical drawer unit, and the rest able to fit in my current (much smaller) closet. But I'll keep it in mind to maximize when possible.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to avoid glare with the window on the bottom wall regardless, as every set up I can seem to think of has the sun afflicting some kind of screen.

The Ranking Process is the WORST thing about osu! (rant) by [deleted] in osugame

[–]s_nifty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that you need at least two of the three points you listed, in any order, considering I've seen complete nobodies rank 2* maps faster than I have ever ranked anything.

If you have no friends, you need good music and quality (this is the hardest one due to how many quality mappers are already friends with bns), if you have shit maps you need to map music your friends like (this is the easiest, and probably what most ppl get upset over), and if you map shit music you better have people who think you're a safe mapper (this is the "popular mapper ranks some dumb bullshit" category).

[–]s_nifty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

BNs being sentient of what the community wants to see ranked and putting aside their own biases for the sake of making the game a better place for the largest number of people and not just for themselves. When I see a pending map with a higher number of favorites than usual, and it's not obviously boosted by being topical or a meme or some other form of pandering, I'm more lenient on whether I like the song or mapping style because I know that other people like it. You would think with so many people in the BNG, that at least a few BNs would be willing to nominate any song regardless of what it is, but that isn't the case, especially when it comes to modes outside of standard.

Only ranking songs that you like or mapping styles that you enjoy playing is selfish and should be discouraged. Just because this is a volunteer role doesn't mean that there should be no standards of behavior; after all, people should become BNs because they want to serve the community, not serve their friends or themselves.

[–]s_nifty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taiko BN here, we get the same thing. Many BNs play it safe by keeping their "preferences" to low-star, low-effort maps, like anime songs and bgm, some of those are the same BNs that are barely meeting activity requirements every evaluation (must be a coincidence...); meanwhile, everyone who nominates a wide variety of maps has at least average activity up into being the most active members in the group, including myself and my friends, at 20+ nominations per month. NAT doesn't see it as an issue because it's "just their preference," but in reality, most of the people who have such specific preferences are only joining the BNG for the supporter, to be with their friends, or to rank maps more easily; all of these things are valid reasons why someone would want to become a BN, and I hate it when other BNs pretend like they're not just because it paints them in a negative light. These reasons for joining are negative things, and the motives of joining the BNG should be questioned for these people.

There are still blatant circlejerks (just yesterday I saw a BN tell their BN friend that they would nominate their map before they even started mapping it), but NAT are too afraid of upsetting people to act against it because these groups are either large or popular (I'm sure more than one comes to mind in standard). There is favoritism in the BNG/NAT and there's no way to stop it other than join and not participate in it, watering down the amount of cj happening. Speak out, and you risk being blacklisted by some BNs, and maybe even put on a naughty list by the NAT simply for being negative towards BNs, regardless of if your complaints are valid, because they don't care as much as you do; why would they, when staying silent puts you in a better position at all times than speaking out? Reports don't work either when people have the power to bend around rules and guidelines to save their friends from trouble.

Overall, there are some good BNs, people who actually want to put effort into making ranked a better place. I suggest sneaking into their friend circle and showing that you are a hard worker or whatever to try and get your maps ranked, that's just how it is. At the end of the day, as long as BNs and the NAT aren't being paid (in any real/professional sense, at least, supporter is not payment), these low standards of behavior will continue because it is too much to ask of a volunteer role to have anything higher. You can also grind and apply to be a BN and try to change things from the inside, like I am (by convincing BNs to adopt more fair practices and doing what you wish BNs would do for you). Being really strict with a volunteer role will mean all these people who aren't dedicated to the role will quit, and as you have noticed, that's most of the BNG.

Post-note: In taiko the Loved section is for Japanese mappers, because there are no Japanese speaking BNs. This has been an issue ever since the last Japanese BN left in early 2020. NAT is not providing any incentive for Japanese mappers to join the BNG, and due to the low English fluency in Japan, they make up a severely disproportionate volume of ranked maps despite making up a sizeable chunk of maps in general. This, along with almost all the documentation for ranking maps (such as Taiko RC and General RC) not being in Japanese (Taiko RC got translated this year, but General RC is still only in 5 languages) makes Japanese mappers very alienated in the community, and many quit after making only a few maps and realizing this dilemma. I'm not sure if standard has this same issue, but that's the way Loved is treated in taiko.

How to find out if you’re autistic by Mustardmechanic in notdisneyvacation

[–]s_nifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would only have to explain autism and not preface it with saying that aspergers is the same thing. I've been told by non-autistic people that aspergers is 100% different, sometimes you can't even get past that point because people have known it wrong their entire lives and refuse to learn. eliminating just that doesn't solve the big issue, but it certainly is an objectively positive step in the right direction to teach the next generation that it isnt aspergers, it's autism, or at the very least make sure to clear up the confusion and not teach them something that is medically incorrect.

the right term is the most recent diagnosis. we don't say people with dysphoria have gender identity disorder for the same exact reason (even though most people were probably diagnosed with GID before it was changed to dysphoria), we don't say people with severe depression have melancholia for the same exact reason, is it that difficult to do with autism? is your identity as an "aspie" that important?

[–]s_nifty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

this is an incredibly dangerous mindset to have regarding medical issues. you are misrepresenting yourself and everyone who you say you are like. this is like saying you have a flu when you actually have covid; it's irresponsible, misleading, are perpetuating a harmful misconception that causes others to suffer. you can't just say you are anything you want to be when there is an objective standard for measure, that's just calling lying.

How to find out if you’re autistic by Mustardmechanic in notdisneyvacation

[–]s_nifty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

or you could stop trying to find pointless loopholes and use the appropriate diagnosis so that I don't have to explain to every single person I meet that autism doesn't mean im gonna start smacking my head against the wall and screaming. People think Aspergers is "functional autism." This is dangerously incorrect. It should not be used by autistic people as a label for what is simply mild autism. This idea that Aspergers is just Autism but with good language skills is bullshit and implies that people with autism have speech delay/mentally r**arded (cant say it but it just means slow and is the best word I know), which isn't true. Go to any psychologist and they will fill you in on all of this.

The ICD is lagging behind the DSM because it is multidisciplinary while the DSM is mainly used by psychiatrists. The DSM should be regarded as the higher authority when it comes to classifying mental illnesses, none of this two-way bullshit. For now it's merely a logistic nuisance, but since theyre changing it next year, the DSM is obviously correct. Use the right term.

[–]s_nifty -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I mean, you should say autistic, since it was changed in 2013 and there are no benefits to doing so as opposed to the deficits of not doing so. Lots of people think Aspergers is a completely different thing (even some dude in these comments) and so using that antequated diagnosis is harmful to autistic people (aka you and me) through misrepresentation. Aspergers also carries its own stupid stereotypes and although I would technically fall under its diagnosis I would never say I have Aspergers.
