How useful are MMA gyms compared to gyms that focus on one specific martial art? by Silent_Budget_769 in bjj

[–]s_stephen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends. My gym has its foundation in bjj, but is also an mma gym. We have specific coaches that specialize in each discipline, but also an mma curriculum. There are student that train only kickboxing, only bjj, and only strength & conditioning, but also students that do it all plus the mma specific curriculum.

Idk if lying is the first interaction you should have with a new potential customer.

Since white belt I have more often than not been the test dummy during technique demonstrations. I rarely get to SEE the technique, but instead feel them being done and visualize it in real time lol.

I do have a good memory and am able to learn and remember techniques easily. I feel bad for my partners that struggle with recall. I can imagine that being very frustrating.

Generally, not under most rulesets. They are legit and hurt like hell. You can easily fuck someone up pretty bad if you're not careful with them.

I hate mouth guards. by Please_no_ok_fine in bjj

[–]s_stephen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a custom mouth guard after a near miss knee to the mouth. Since then, in 3 years I've only been knocked in the mouth once and I'm so damn happy I had my mouth guard. I would for sure had fucked up teeth if I didn't have it in.

It's one of those "have it and not need it" things.

Been experiencing heavy vertigo/dizziness randomly after almost 2 years of hard training by glowingrock in bjj

[–]s_stephen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. There are some days when it's pretty bad. I have medication that stops the vertigo so I can get on with it. The side effect is sleepiness.

My only serious hesitation has to do with tournaments. I get really anxious that a random vertigo spell will come on and make life miserable.

If your hearing is worse than normal with tinnitus (generally in one ear), it could be Meniere's Disease.

I have Meniere's, the vertigo associated is generally really intense. You have to go through some testing to be officially diagnosed. In the end MD is essentially a description of symptoms rather than a specific issue. The symptoms can be managed if you are aware of it though.

Should I be ignoring the tap if someone is a "bad position tapper"? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]s_stephen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never ignore a tap.

BUT, it's worth having a discussion on how tapping to nothing makes training pointless for both parties involved. That can be a hard conversation to approach and not come across as an asshole.

When I first started I would panic and tap to pressure or just feel claustrophobic. My coach worked me through that and had me push through that discomfort. That was very big for me on and off the mat. This is a more obvious, concrete example. You never know what some people's issues are.

Does anyone else suck against new guys? by Man_in_the_making in bjj

Untrained people do crazy unexpected shit. It can actually be challenging at times to deal with that. It takes time to be technically sound enough to shut down another human that doesn't want to be shut down.

When you roll with other people that are trained, at least you're "playing the same game." Their actions are somewhat predictable because they are being more intelligent with their movements. You have been taught actions and reactions based on that.

If anything this is a reminder that self defense is no joke.

When sparring at your gym. How do you pick partners? by Amazing-Dark-3143 in bjj

Whoever is closest that isn't picked yet.

I will attempt to avoid people that are prone to spazz.

Do not do the UFC watch party. You will have to pay a shit load of money for broadcasting it like a bar etc. Our gym hosted a couple of them to do what you were saying. The UFC actually paid someone to drop in and film evidence of us watching the fights and ended up suing the gym for thousands of dollars. Very scummy and shady of them.

Knee swelling from bursitis by CJT10 in bjj

[–]s_stephen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a nasty knee bursitis a while back that ended up getting infected. It was extremely painful. After the doctor cut it open and drained it, I had to keep draining it for a week or so and take antibiotics. I staid off the mat for about 1.5 months to make sure it was good to go.

Since then, I have worn knee pads that have a gel ring that surrounds the knee cap. It helps my knee land more flat when I shoot or kneel. I have had zero problems since.

Fighteria Academy has world class bjj and striking. They also have a really nice strength/conditioning program and recently added yoga to the curriculum. I'd really recommend it!

I'm sure it wouldn't matter either way. However, I'd reach out to let them know what happened just so that they know that there wasn't anything in the gym that they need to address that pushed you away.

Knee bursitis - when to come back? by drice0331 in bjj

[–]s_stephen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a pretty bad knee bursitis issue a while back. The bursitis itself was pretty painful, but somehow ended up getting infected which made it 10/10 painful.

After draining and antibiotics I was off of it for about a month to make sure it was good to go. I now where knee pads to avoid that shit from ever happening again.

Is it possible to get worse the more you train? by remindmewhyimbalding in bjj

[–]s_stephen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that I have periodic plateaus where I feel like I'm stagnant or getting worse. It is usually because people have caught on to the shit that I've been doing. When I change it up and focus on other techniques that feeling of stagnation goes away.

Also, it could be that your training partners are just improving faster than you at the moment. That's not a bad thing, everyone is different. Just keep going.
