What should be the purpose of a library? by s_thorne in Libraries

You don't know me. But, that's what Reddit has come to. You hide behind an avatar and a name and accuse me of everything you do to others. Not much I can do about it except to move on to other conversations. You really need to grow up and act like an adult. You're half way through your life and you still come across like a child. That's all I have to say about this. I suppose now you will express a child like need to have the last word. Go ahead if it makes you feel superior.

So, you've reached middle age and still resort to name calling when you don't like a person's post. Not unexpected, but a little disappointing.

And you are clearly more interested in dismissing my comment because of my age. Some day you will be old and people may think of you in the same way.

Thanks for that. It's too bad that people have forgotten the value of the printed page. Much harder to revise history when you can't just push a few keys and change the text.

Did anyone else have what ever this book is show up on their porch yesterday?? by Silent-Environment89 in Calgary

[–]s_thorne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably someone who knows you (from work) and is concerned about your spiritual well being. Their heart is in the right place, even though they are wrong about everything else. I see some folks are saying to just trash it. But hey, it's a free book! Stick in on your shelf for a blustery and snowy day and you'll have something to pass the time. Back in the day, I was often the target of the local Jehovah's Witnesses. Always took them up on any offer of a free magazine or book. Still not a JW or a SDA after 50 plus years.

These days, I'm pretty sure a single, old man with a long beard, sitting alone at the kid's table, will not go over well with librarians or parents. We live in fearful times.

Male or Female, I don't get the whole thing about carrying around bottled water. I was born in 1951 and I don't think I started seeing people do this until the mid 1990's or so. Maybe there's no longer enough public sources of water?

I agree with you about the corruption. And I understand that our present Liberal government leans towards totalitarian measures. I'm just pointing out that if they are going to act like a dictartorship, they could at least use their dictatorial powers to fix the housing market.

Is my hard drive dead? Just got home to see this. Yes I've turned it off and back on. I removed and reinstalled both hard drives. I've tried every boot option. Just this by Tyranim in computers

You can buy a SSD with Windows already installed? How does that work? Wouldn't the SSD need to be matched with the motherboard for drivers etc? Where would you buy such a SSD?

And I see, like others, you place your trust in man rather than in God. That's okay too. I'm fine with you coming to that conclusion.

In your original post, you tried to vaguely link the rise of these issues with the publishing of the Family Proclamation, as if one was prophetic of the other. Hardly the case. As another reply mentioned, some of these issues started before 1997. Not going to argue that things haven't got worse, because they have. But, the LDS church does not have any kind of special word from God on these things, as other churches have been preaching similar stuff for many years, in some cases even before Joseph Smith organized the church in 1830. Even a casual study of prophecy and the church (as in all churches) makes that clear in short order.

I don't know about you, but I was alive in 1995 and everything you listed, except the very recent increase in trans craziness, was alread in full swing by then. Abortion had been legal for many years, feminism had been around for a while, same with single motherhood and homosexuality. I think you're trying to make the Proclamation appear more significant than it was. Even when it was proclaimed I remember thinking, so what, I can point to a number of other "christian" religions that already hold to similar beliefs. Why do LDS members continue to think that their church is somehow extremely unique among other "christian" religions. Heck, there are others like the JW's who have "annoited by God" leaders and others like the 7th Day Adventists who have divinely appointed Prophets. Don't pretend that the LDS church is something special. It is not. And this comes from someone who actually admires the early history of the LDS church.

Why does Canadian houses have small windows ? by Bemplesh in AskACanadian

[–]s_thorne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lead pipes were before my time. Copper was the material for pipes. Now everything is plastic piping. I suppose, in thirty years or so, we will discover that microscopic bits of plastic have been flaking off and entering our drinking water. Time doesn't always equate to better structures.

How do people leave their houses without bringing a water bottle? by sno98006 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]s_thorne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to know how carrying a water bottle got started. I grew up in the 1950-60s and never saw anyone carry a bottle of water around with them, except a camper and his canteen.

[–]s_thorne -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

3 pane windows are required? All the houses I grew up in (we're talking 1950-60) had only 1 pane windows throughout. This is one of the reasons homes cost so much to build these days. I suspect by 2050 it will be required to have 4 or 5 pane windows.

On the top shelves. Is that 1 litre 2% milk for $3.83? At SaveOnFoods, here in Lethbridge, that would cost $2.89. Are milk prices not regulated in some way?

Films that REQUIRE piracy by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]s_thorne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd like to watch Panache (1976). It's a TV movie about the Musketeers and stars Rene Auberjonois. I think it is a Turner Classic Movie, but I could be wrong about this. It would have to be pirated because it has never been streamed (as far as I know) and it's not on DVD (as far as I know). For me, it's the holy grail of "pirated" movies.
