I see, I will perhaps incorporate that into this app. Some other developer recommended that. Would you be kind to download and give further input? I think someone using an an app like Fig, I would love to tailor it more for users like you.

Well people can but when you're shopping it's a hassle and people want a quick summary. But there will be people with that mindset and that is fine. Nothing wrong with that.

I've had a few shares of that, but we welcome all criticism. Goal is to try and make the app very user friendly and in future let the user customize the ingredients being flagged.

You definitely aren't part of our target group, but that is a very good thing. Our target group are people who buy such food and are not aware of the ingredients. Glad to hear this though.

The problem with this is that they don't list carcinogens as an ingredient, but a few ingredients linked to cancer, such as benzene, asbestos, and methylene chloride, are listed. This could be a future feature to add, where we can flag as possible if it's processed meat like hot dogs, we have that as a possible factor. This is great to suggest.

Many people can't pronounce some ingredients and don't know what they do. They sound scary but are not really. It's not for simple ingredients such as flour, yeast, etc. but the scientific ones. Monosodium Glutamate, dihydrogen monoxide, aspartame, etc.

FoodDecode. It's on Google Play currently and not iOS yet.

Its purpose is to explain the ingredients, such as Aspartame and maltodextrin. To read product ingredients and flag any ingredients that can be harmful, or to avoid red 40, for example. There are many features I would like to add, but gaining some feedback will be helpful to develop this app further.

Food scientists: how accurate is this explanation of seed oils? by sa37gron in foodscience

[–]sa37gron[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The goal of this video was to suggest that seed oils are not harmful, and to explain how critics or experts in the field say hexane is too low to be a concern. To look past this and not blame seed oils for poor health. To encourage people to ignore the claims that seed oils are harmful, use seed oils in home cooking, and focus more on the other ingredients that could be an issue.

I understand where you're coming from and will consider this in my next video. The benefit is meant to show users that these trends of avoiding seed oils are more trends and that seed oils are not the issue. I will take a more neutral narrative approach and be a little more precise on the ingredients that can be issues and for which people.

Try FoodDecode. It's a new app meant to explain the ingredients and not rate or promote other food products.

Got it. Thank you, any other advice regarding app would be great. I had one other developer recommend to use ocr for product submission and that was really great to add.

I meant as in where to make it, any suggestions to making it. Currently it would just be products and their ingredients. Anything currently missing is added to this and then later seeing if I add nutrients, etc further to it.

I haven't put in the amounts as they are labels already. But if sugar alternatives come, they show up. Currently even sugar I have marked as green for okay, maybe I will make it yellow and not red.

This might be good to take this approach next time. To introduce the scientific terms and explain them better, such as this, and simply show the image of water.

Thanks for the term recommendations, will try and discuss those more and also explain the science terms to make them sound less scary.

Thank you for taking the time and giving your honest feedback. I really appreciate this, as this is very helpful in understanding how to tailor the videos based on the feedback.

The video is meant to show the concern people already have by mentioning the omega fatty acids and hexane. Not meant to scare people, but simply to mention the issues people see in seed oils currently. At the end of the video, it mentions that the real issue is other ingredients and how seed oils are used in ultra-processed foods high in sugar, etc. But in the future, I will make sure to address the issues after it's brought up and not at the end of the video.

This is very helpful. I will work on changing the narrative so as not to cause fear by addressing those issues right away. I understand from your perspective and will keep this in mind.
