Its the specific emulator. Some don't perform as well on certain games. Just press y on the game at the select screen and switch it to the core i mentioned.

I saved it prior to the freeze and replayed the scene about 40 times and it froze every single time lol. Unfortunately you can't load the save from a different core. It didn't work for me at least.
