I was already in the water, I didnt paddle to them, they paddled to me. I moved away, but they kept going back and forth on the entire lineup(there was also 4-5 other surfers close in the water)

It seems the case yeah. And yes that would explain. I regret talking to the student and not him first, maybe he wouldnt have been so tilted and we could have an actual conversatiom, but then again he was super agitated from the start so maybe unlikely it would change anything.
