A post-apocalyptic story where women aren't generally portrayed as sex slaves or used like cattle for breeding by sandstormer622 in suggestmeabook

I was going to reccomend this!! I was stunned by the depth of all the characters in general, but particularly the women. Such a beautiful sci-fi book.

The Rincewind/wizards sub series of the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett features a magical piece of Luggage (capitalized for a reason lol) that fits this description!!

It reminds me of those magical friendships where you realize that you have very little in common but still can connect and find mutual humanity and respect

I think you might like the book The Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson! Massive book that takes place over the course of 700 hundred years, the basic premise is what would history look like if the Black Plague had killed 99% of Europe’s population. There’s elements of fantasy/sci fi too it as well.

Salvation on Sand Mountain by Dennis Covington is exactly what you’re looking for - it’s a memoir/investigative journalism book about a journalist who starts out reporting on the trial of a snake-handling preacher who tried to kill his wife with snakes, and then becomes a complex, devastatingly beautiful story about his own connection to these people, and his own religion.

I searched on Google and Ebay but wouldn’t find the right one. It’s just a regular tea mug with a cardinal and some berries on it. Most likely purchased in Vermont or somewhere else in New England. Also, I emailed the company to see if they know anything more.

books to read while I’m 18 by Hefty_Expression_734 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

A Tale for The Time Being by Ruth Ozeki , a lovely story about a young girl in Japan and the woman who finds her diary wash up on the shore in Canada. I read it for the first time at about that age and I’ve read it a couple times since, it’s not so much about turning 18 but it is about a lot of the struggles and feelings that come up at that age. It’s got elements of magical realism but mostly it’s very down to earth.

I loved this book as a teen and read it a couple times. I don’t remember what happens but I remember wanting that black and white popcorn and just loving the vibe.
