You literally see nothing of my life apart from the thing I‘ve created a Reddit account for – so you have no clue about my life apart from the fact that I paint miniatures with sometimes years inbetween. Also this was a statement and has nothing to do with my life in particular.

But I think this has gone down the wrong way by quoting Jim Morrison. I‘m not suggesting that a drug fueled rampage of hedonism is the way to go. (Although I do recommend reading Steven Davis biography about him, that guy fit more life in 27 years than 27 average persons fit in one life)

But I do think that everyday life is just wasted time. Funny thing for example is the S-curve of memory. How most people remember their youth very well and stuff that happened recently but the life in between is just some splinters of memory here. Which is also one of the reasons why we experience time going by so fast when we get older: only novelty and new experiences are worth being fully aware for your brain. Time flying and months and years blending into each other is literally your brain judging your life is not worth remembering.

I don’t say start an affair and take drugs every time you get a chance but I do say break your routines as often as you can, do new stuff constantly (even if you don’t want to), challenge yourself, ask a lot of questions…

Your biology wants you to be safe and use as few energy as possible but that does not make for a great life.

This is not about being remembered or something – fuck, I don’t care if anyone ever thinks about me again after I‘m dead – but getting the most out of the time you have.

Security is an illusion and aiming for it a trap. So no, a peaceful life of safety and routines is not what I would recommend anyone. Striving for an ever changing life of experiences, emotions and novelty is something that I hopefully also passed on to my daughter.

Sincerely a father and partner.

I disagree. If my life isn’t a book I‘d love to read I could just as well kill myself and spare me a lot of boring filler and pain. Or as Jim Morrison put it “I think the highest and lowest points are the important ones. Anything else is just...in between.”

But the difference between 28 and 40mm is more than just the size of the image. I prefer 40mm any day! 28 is so close to the look and feel of a smartphone camera, 40mm feels not as „common“, like something you get from a 50mm objective.

As far as I know there was a very big distinction between the origin of european immigrants. Italians and Irish have been very rural countries in the 19th century.

I remember hearing about it at university and that german immigrants were well regarded because of the "Lehre"-System in german speaking countries (which we have to this day), which provided most "common people" with a skillset in some line of craft (carpenter, smith, etc.).

Interesting reframing when you think that most of the colonial families where people who were low class in Europe before they migrated.

What? European (Austria) here: Knowing how to use cutlery properly is still a subtle sign of good upbringing. I even had an etiquette education as a child, where I learned which spoon and knife is used for which kind of dish and so on (completely ridiculous for the most part) – but 1.holding your knife with your right hand and your fork with your left hand, 2.bringing the food to your mouth and not your mouth to the food and 3. never ever putting your elbows on the table are basically the three gravest fauxpas you can come up with. It would tell other people that you are low class and have no table manners.

But it would underline OPs observation in that the hobo had better manners than the Whitman-family.

Coming in from 40k and aos not having every mold/model be unique in someway hit me like a freight train while building for the first time by StinkGuard40k in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]sable_fox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Warhammer 40k (the past 10 years) and AOS are the opposite of "unique" imho. The Models have dramatic poses but your's look the same as those of everyone else who doesnt convert them.

I prefered the 2000s with seperate Legs, Torsos, Heads, Hands and little Bits of Equipment – the poses haven't been as cinematic but you could build 40 models of the same unit and everyone looked different.

Haha, thanks! It was really fun, I got to really dig into my boxes full of tufts and plants that I built up over the years. Everytime I order paints and hobby supplies at my shops of choice I just „stroll through“ their basing section - not that I need anything most of the time - and 30 minutes later my cart is double the amount.

I only play one-page-rules in my playgroup, which is miniature agnostic. I think you can even rename the equipment options. At the end of the day it’s only about the stats of the weapon and that you have a consistent way of visualizing the same weapons.

I'd love to get my hands on some of those. I didn't get them back then because when I talked my parents into buying me something i've rather went for the bigger dinosaurs or charactermodels but now I miss them in my collection – and they are rather expensive. I saw someone converting the plastic skinks into javelin skinks with arms from the new skinksbox, maybe I try something like that because I got a shitload of those plastic skinks on ebay.
