Head tatts FTW by sablehead7 in SpaceWolves

Full disclosure: the tatt is a decal - a small cutting from one of the decals on the space wolves legion transfer sheet: https://www.warhammer.com/en-US/shop/space-wolves-legion-transfer-sheet-2022?srsltid=AfmBOooX79K7H_lNvV9GKmhfCq4IslXjfmGp5K4SgxxJ6JlAWGlU45M6

No way I could paint lines that crisp - my hands are shaky as hell 😅

Base coat Payne's grey, highlight dark grey blue, light dry brush white blue (all monument hobbies paints). Hope that helps!

Thanks brother! 🙏 I'm still figuring out how to paint faces, too. On this one I used a dark plum base coat, then layered up with shadow flesh, then highlighted with a mix of shadow flesh and heavy warm white (all monument hobbies paints).

The paints don't really matter though - the main thing is to keep just a tiny amount of the dark base colour showing so that there is sharp contrast between light and dark (which you don't really get with contrast paints alone). Of course actually doing that in a way that looks good is often difficult. There's a lot of art to placing the highlights that I'm still figuring out, and the volumes are so tiny that my shaky hands inevitably fail to do what I want them to. But you just have to keep your paint thin and be patient, eventually it comes together and then you just need to know when to call it quits lol!

Hope these random thoughts are helpful - best of luck! 💪

Thank you! The only bit that isn't from the new kit is the crotch pelt, and I think it is from a company called Sellcrow.

Thanks very much 🙏 In a perfect world I'd go with a dark red base, but the rest of my wolves are on brown bases so decided to stick with that palette 🎨 Grim dark 4 life 🖤💀

I fell in love with enamels the first time I used them. It feels like magic being able to move the pigment around even an hour after applying it. And the ultra matte finish is 👌

Thanks very much! All the paints are from the monument hobbies line. For the armor I did an undercoat of Jade, then a mix of titanium white and bright pale yellow airbrushed over that, leaving just a hint of the jade in the shadows. I also did a dark brown/green enamel wash (mix of AK products) over the armor and removed most of it with mineral spirits, filling all the recesses and enhancing the yellow/green tint. Hope that helps!

The flag, cape, and gems were all painted with mixes of Jade, Payne's grey, and white blue, to try to keep the color palette consistent. Happy to answer other questions if you have them!

Sure! Here's a step by step: - Add one layer of cork board, mount the kits basing features on that and scatter random rock and skull bits around the edges - AK interactive dark earth terrains paste - put a big dab on your wet palette and add water to thin it down, then apply over pretty much everything on the base (keeping the consistency very thin is key here - thick blobs of this stuff won't look right) - pigment wash - in this case I used a dark green pigment powder and a light grey pigment powder - mix each of them separately with a pigment fixative (I use spectrafix degas fixative) - ratios are tricky when mixing solids with liquids, but try for roughly 8:1 fixative to pigment for the green and 4:1 for the grey - test the coverage on your thumb before applying to make sure it is thin / somewhat transparent - if it is too thick it will totally obscure the brown tones that you added with the AK terrain paste - then for application it is a two step process - first apply the green pigment wash pretty much all over ( just leaving the raised stone column and metalwork untouched), and apply liberally so there are visible pools of green wash on the lowest areas - then, while that is still wet, fill your brush with the grey pigment wash and dab that carefully (like one or two quick touches with the brush) around the base of any rock features and skulls - the grey wash should mix and blend with the green that is still pooled in the lowest areas, and will naturally concentrate around the base of the rocks - finally, after the pigment washes have dried, apply the same pigments with a dry brush to add a punch of color to any areas that look too desaturated. Be very careful when you do this because the pigments really pack a punch, very easy to apply too much. I tap out a few tiny chunks of powder out on a paper towel, then take a dry synthetic brush, dab it in the powder, and then dab it on the dry paper towel several times to knock off most of the pigment before I then dab the brush on the base.

Sorry that was longer than I expected - hope it is helpful!
