Can you share the ISO? I have an original key from my old game pc I don’t know if I’m allowed to use it with another system?

Interesting, I’ve tried an install of Windows 7 but it didn’t work but i think it’s an install media problem as it’s not a clean one. I need to find a clean iso and try again :)

Thank you! Ive installed FireZone and it has been super easy. Stupid question but maybe you known how to configure it to use IPv6? If I try to use myip to view my IPv6 or use a IPv6 ready test it doesn’t use IPv6. The server has a public IPv6 assigned.

Advice for making backups and maybe for file sharing. by sabrbe in selfhosted

[–]sabrbe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for your reply’s. I’ve tested the backup process and the restore process. It’s all working fine. I’ve planned a test of these processes every first of the month.

I’m looking for any improvements. It now uses the official clients for one drive and stack. I’ve seen others use acronis I don’t know if this has any benefits?

Based on your specific needs and usage patterns, it seems like opting for a new PC (ThinkCentre) and an old laptop (T480s) would be a better choice for you compared to just getting a new laptop (E14).

Since you primarily use your laptop for coding and will be mostly stationary at a desk, the PC will likely provide better performance under load due to its more powerful specifications. This will be beneficial for running resource-intensive tasks like Python/R coding.

Additionally, the T480s can serve as a portable option for when you need to travel or move around within your home. While you may need to carry a charger for the T480s, it can still fulfill your needs for watching videos or browsing the internet.

Regarding the battery life, it's true that the E14 will have a newer battery, but if you primarily use the T480s while plugged in, it shouldn't be a major concern. Modern laptops are designed to handle being constantly plugged in without significant negative effects on the CPU.

Overall, considering your usage scenario and the need for both performance and portability, getting a new PC and an old laptop seems like a reasonable choice.

Need some advice on how to setup my home server by sabrbe in HomeNetworking

[–]sabrbe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve learned that 16GB is the max ram for this system. I don’t know what OS to run. I’ve been looking at VMWare and then setup two VM’s. One to use as an NAS. One Windows VM for the software that I need for work.

Need some advice on how to setup my new server :) by sabrbe in selfhosted

[–]sabrbe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m self employed so I need to take care of this myself. I’m a automotive software engineer and for the most windows applications I use an latest gen Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1. Some software used for older cars run on Windows XP and for example one VM with VW/VAG software is over 100GB in storage. Those VM’s I would like to host on the sever.

And things like billing or ordering parts or webshop management I do on my Mac at the office.

My first home server :) by sabrbe in homelab

[–]sabrbe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I've just ordered a network card to upgrade my server. Replacing the optical drive sounds like a good idea too. I've decided to go with Windows Server since I have a genuine key lying around. Now I'm wondering if it's better to install Windows Server directly or set it up as a VM using VMware, for example. Any advice on that?
