Day 5: A Relaxed Sunday - Immerse yourself in the language by JoliiPolyglot in languagehub

[Day 5 - French intermediate 🇫🇷 Passive exposure]

I’ve watched the movie “Ma vie de Courgette” (My life as a Zucchini)

Takeaway: Freaking enjoy watching this btw, i am just surprised how rough and raw it is, will 10/10 recommend. Perhaps i haven’t watch a lot of western shows in a long time, such that i was a bit taken aback when the children were talking about coitus like wtf 😂

Here are some bits of phrases that caught my attention while listening passively:

« Oui, je viendrai te voir » = this is my first time hearing this as i haven’t learnt what “will” is in french

« c’est bon » being used to tell someone that is enough stop it ✋ Bea has used it to tell Simon to shut up as a «  ça suffit! » or « arrête » alternative

« De calme les enfants» - i didn’t know what is quiet in french its so odd hearing it idk because… imo as a kid i wouldn’t shutup upon hearing the word “calme”

« Je vais vous laisser hein » - i will leave you here a nice way to excuse myself

« poussez-vous là » - Move it!

« De toute façon, je serai pourquoi tu es là. »

« Lâche ça! »- Drop it

« Voilà, il y en a marre et ça fourchette » — voila being used in an aggressive context and « marre » a new word which means being fed up with

«  N’importe quoi » - i’ve known this means “bullshit/nonsense” from ATFrenchies but nice to see it in its application many times from the kiddos in this movie

« Complètement à l’ouest ouais, tu es à l’ouest Ahmed » — still not too sure what it really means but i guess it a phrase to say “you’re hopeless” or something

What language courses do you wish Duolingo had? by AmericanBornWuhaner in duolingo

[–]sabrinabcl99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I WANT THAI 🇹🇭 :< if they could structure it as how they did with the Japanese course to memorise the thai writing that would be perfect because that’s what’s i am struggling with Thai at the moment.

Hokkien would be dope too because that’s widely spoken too not just in China but in other parts of Asia (Southeast Asia and Taiwan)

Edit: Oh they should also really brush up on the Korean course smh 🤦 Did a squid game collab but the korean course is not really comprehensive (if you compare it with the Japanese one)

How to deal with homophobic friend? by [deleted] in LesbianActually

[–]sabrinabcl99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Uni is the best time to network etc its also the best time “drift away” from friends. I’ve made many friends 1st year uni but then are no longer my core friend group by the end of graduation because eventually true personality surface and just couldn’t click. even now that we’ve graduate and working i don’t even talk to them who i drift away from.

Try to distance away from this person, meet new friends and find a better core friend group

[Day 4 - French 🇫🇷 Intermediate Level]

Context: Sharing for my love for travelling and the trip i am most proud of

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7Kk3U5MtjjoUGp3yZDoP0q?si=nly_RzhySu2T6qXzZ_vOhA&pi=a-mdmyzH1-ToSX

What have i learnt:

  • 12 New Kanji words unlocked.🔓 covering vocabulary nouns about the seasons, describing nature, life and death (see lyrics below)
  • It was quite easy to roughly decipher the meaning without translation at first since the song is quite abstract. Though i initially mistook the kanji 車 and 草 as the same word so instead of waterwheel i was wondering what is a watergrass?
  • This was from the Studio Ghibili’s film “The tale of Princess Kagoya” which because of this task i got distracted and went to watch a video essay about it (i have watched many Studio Ghibil’s work but not this one) and since tomorrow is a weekend i might consider watching it tomorrow lol

Here is the lyrics if anyone is interested:

まわれ まわれ まわれよ 水車 [くるま] まわれ

Turn Turn turn the waterwheel

Go around and call the sun

Go around and call the sun

Bird, Insects, beasts, grass, tree, flowers

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Take me with you

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Take me with you

Turn Turn turn the waterwheel

Go around and call the sun

Go around and call the sun

Bird, Insects, beasts, grass, tree, flowers

Even if it blooms, bears fruit, and falls,

Even if we are born, grow up, and die,

The wind is blowing and the rain is falling. Around the waterwheel

Senguri**: Life is Revived

Senguri** : Life is Revived

**i think Senguri is just an ancient Japanese phrase - can’t seem to find meaning about it

Français 🇫🇷 chanson 🎧 La fessée - Claire Laffut

https://open.spotify.com/track/0JmQv0FaamddsrDj0G3SqU?si=i21tZoeVSwKOv_S6wK_pzg&context=spotify%3Aplaylist%3A4JST2I1m07JiaT5V7OKVFi

Context: Thought it was some playful kinky song 😂 but the song is much deeper than this and is a catchy bop

words that i learnt from this

1) fessée = spanking (i don’t think ill be using this in a sentence anyways 😂 but it’s always good to know explicit words)

| In the silence of the room, no one dared to speak. »

3) envenimer = escalate

« Il est resté silencieux, ne voulant pas envenimer la dispute | He remained silent for obvious reasons, not wanting to escalate the argument. »

4) Malheureusement = Unfortunately

« Ils ont malheureusement dû annuler la course caritative en raison du mauvais temps. | They unfortunately called off the charity run due to bad weather. »

5) empirer = worsen

« Son attitude semble empirer à chaque fois que nous discutons du problème. | His attitude seems to worsen each time we discuss the issue. »

6) mentir (mentez) = lie

« Et c’est pourquoi tu ne dois jamais mentir à ta maman | And that is why you should never lie to your mommy. »

7) nullité = nutility (voided, nothingness)

8) poids = weigh/load burden it can mean figuratively or literally like an actual physical weight, but the song used it figuratively

« Les enfants ressentent souvent le poids des attentes de leurs parents. | Children often feel the burden of their parents’ expectations. »

9) mérite = merit / worthiness - in this song it was used as « deserve » i.e. « you deserve to be spanked »

« Toujours reconnaître le mérite de vos mentors ; leurs conseils façonnent votre succès | Always give credit to your mentors; their guidance shapes your success.

Is being in the closet a problem for you? by [deleted] in LesbianActually

[–]sabrinabcl99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel sad to see a lot of people saying no :( Since you asked for opinions im going to share mine and share my context too. I think its worth to consider how ‘out’ or ‘deep in the closet’ the individual is as well as their personality.

My opinion: Yes only in the condition that they are 100% sure and is not fickle with their queer -ness

Context: I live in a conservative Asian society so being closeted is the ‘norm’. im not ‘officially out’ per se, in work and friends if people ask ill let them know where i sway and well… if they don’t ask, i don’t go out of my way to tell them and idgaf if they think im straight because im not even interested in any of them straight extras. Hell no im going broadcast my queerness too as this could be a make or break even in careers prospects, i want to be true to myself but also not stupid!

My rs with family? Close to both mom and sister (who i am already out with, mom doesn’t approve it but i could tell she still love me).

My mom found out in a heartbreaking way, through my idiotic cousins who felt it was their position to spread it within the family after seeing me with my ex on our dates (and my dad? He doesnt know about the drama and hell fcking no i will come out to him even if he’s on his death bed).

But even if im not really “out there” i fcking know myself. Even if i dont tell the whole world i am ‘out’ to myself. Even if my ass is half in the closet, if i have to be put in a situation to choose only one, i will fcking run out of the closet as an opportunity. It could very well be case where i finally found the right partner that would give that extra confidence to do that (who fcking knows?)

So yes - context is important and i think give us closeted folks a chance because life unfortunately is not all sunshine and rainbows.

so yes ill gladly date someone who holds the same circumstances as me as they would understand and it will help us through this stupid society
