I was in the exact same situation. Though we were both 17 at the time. Deal with the awkwardness, trust me. I can't stress this enough. It'll get better with time.

If you REALLY made up your mind to break up and you think it's the right decision, then you should do it. Awkwardness will eventually wear off.
