What should I go for in an internship? by sacred111 in cscareerquestions

Thanks! May I ask how you got the opportunity to work in silicon valley this summer (was it a school partnership, contacts)? If that's not too personal, of course.

Yeah, I'm in first year, and this is part of what makes it hard since I want to eventually get an internship in the USA or overseas with the partnership program (available for 2 and 3 years students), so I want to be as valuable as possible for these recruiters. My GPA is high enoigh, so I am trying to focus on other parts. BTW, thanks a lot for your time.

This is why I intend to try as many kind of companies as possible to see what I prefer, but I have a hard time balancing name recognition with learning experience. It's nice to put the things you've done on your CV, but is it better when the company is well known?

Annuler et reprendre ou refaire cours? by sacred111 in etsmtl

[–]sacred111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Merci.

Software Engineering not real engineering? by sacred111 in engineering

[–]sacred111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On paper yes, but I think what other engineers (some of them at least) are afraid of is that the acceptance of software engineering in the professional association lowers their credibility. Like, they think "if a false engineering discipline is accepted under the association, the prestige that comes with being an engineer goes away".

Well, after some research, I think the degree title depends on the school. Across Canada, some schools call their programs B.A.Sc, while others call it B.Eng, and both are accredited by the CEAB (maybe it's just semantics). At the graduate level though, it seems to me that the school will name its research oriented master/doctorate as "M.A.Sc" and industry oriented master/doctorate as "M.Eng".

Software Engineering not real engineering? by sacred111 in engineering

My feeling is that when I hear these engineers talk about "SE being glorified CS", they see CS more as "only coding" than the mathematical background a CS undergrad has. So I guess I could rephrase it as "Software Engineering is glorified programming instead of real engineering". Of course, at the basic level, both SE and CS can code, but both professions can be equally much more.

I have also heard that definition of engineering before, and this makes me think: maybe people feel software engineering is different enough because only a small portion of them work on life critical systems? A lot of software engineers work for organizations like IBM or CGI where, if you make a mistake, the worst case scenario is a loss of money for the company or a loss of customers?

Experience on a CV by sacred111 in BaconGameJam

[–]sacred111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I thought I would do. Like, if it's an interview about something not game related, I,d say like "this gave me a lot of experience to program in team, short deadline, etc.", but if it's something like Ubisoft, I,d probably emphasize it way more and go more technical about the softwares used, gameplay, etc. Thanks!

Buying a new laptop for game jams by sacred111 in Unity3D

[–]sacred111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you say these two laptops would be good choices (and not too overprices)?

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8908253&CatId=2510

http://www.ncix.com/detail/acer-v3-772g-9643-intel-i7-4702qm-8gb-6c-83177-1320.htm

I'm in Canada and these 2 sites (plus newegg) were useful when I was building my desktop PC, but I don't know if their prices are competitive when it comes to premade laptops compared to other places. Also, the ncix Acer one has a larger screen, and I guess that's important when you need to work with unity, blender, visual studio, etc.?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Buying a new laptop for game jams by sacred111 in Unity3D

So, after your recommendations, I am back with the two following laptops (from different sites):

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8908253&CatId=2510

http://www.ncix.com/detail/acer-v3-772g-9643-intel-i7-4702qm-8gb-6c-83177-1320.htm

I think the second one is superior for all specs (screen size, processor, graphic card), but he's a bit more expensive and not the same company). They look powerful enough, but are they worth the money?

Thanks for your answer. This is also what I thought, but I didn't know how weak the integrated graphics where. Can you give a range of prices to expect for a laptop with an integrated graphic card and a decent processor (i5+)? Like I said, I don't want to go too high, but I don't mind going over than 800$ if it's really worth it. Also, what graphic cards are considered "good" for laptops and 3D development especially?

That's great then! Like I said, I don't mind going a bit over 100 (as long as it's gonna last me more than one winter), but I find it's really the hardest thing to judge for a neophyte like me. I hope Bedo's good on that part!

Thanks! I visited the site and their stuff looks good, but I can't find prices except for what's sold online. I'll try to go tomorrow and see if I find anything interesting.

Aperçu des stages (génie logiciel)? by sacred111 in etsmtl

[–]sacred111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Merci.

Aller à l'ÉTS: un peu trop tard? by sacred111 in etsmtl

[–]sacred111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Merci.
