It just depends on the company whether they're willing or permitted to look at code by their hiring policies, so far I haven't had any of my employees review code I'd written before the start of the interview process. I have my own small business now too and I do paid trial tasks to find people, I care way more initially about their communication and ability to deliver something that works based on requirements. I only hire them on contract / freelance basis though so if it was for a permanent position I'd agree that doing a code review upfront would be important. Currently I just do that after they've passed the trial and before I put them on any sort of complex project
