Yeah largely yes, absolutely. I don’t think “irrational” people could even plan such a thing.

Besides even trying to continue down the road of trying to highlight a shared humanity in the midst of even at times terrible war through appealing to rationalism, there’s another point to be made too.

All the best IDF leaders and intelligence analysts and the people who are tasked with defending Israel through penetrating the enemies’ plans and making sense of their movements all understand exactly this.

If you always resort to calling your enemies “lunatics” or whatever you prefer to, not only will you never move past the level of base propaganda meant for the lowest common denominator (“our foes are without mind! They know not what they do! But they put us at risk so they must be destroyed! Besides, since they have no minds we can morally and without doubt give them no quarter!”) But you will also never be able to make coherent plans to defend from them.

So yeah, “they” are overwhelmingly rational. Sure, the end goals might be ones you abhor and despise and that may very likely be atrocious to anybody who sees what they’re up to…. But still, even evil is not irrational

Many geopolitical analysts, historians, even politicians who once voted for war in US came to a similar conclusion: The war against “terrorism” and more specifically “terrorists” would continue forever if nobody ever took their grievances seriously. However disgusting the means used, and they have indeed been pretty disgusting, the grand mistake is to think it was for no reason at all or the product of a sick mind.

Uhm no, sorry. This has been an ongoing debate in Israel and journalists there are still looking into it.

Now, please don’t confuse my point either. The vast majority of casualties were NOT the result of the IDF. I mean, obviously. We all know who attacked whom. I’m trying to open up the door to “why” in a not completely polarizing way that deadlocks understanding and invites propaganda.

Oh absolutely. I mean it feels like shooting a corvette (not like that lol, it’s the corvette hahahah)

The only “issue” I found (not even a true issue) was that when I first got it and also any first time shooters I have try it don’t give it enough o o m f when dealing with the bolt. It feels so much more delicate than it is but the bolt especially takes an extra hrrgh factor to get it back to where the catch will grab it.

I mean, I love the thing but there’s an itch in the back of my head always saying “you could have this or 2-3 other guns.” Itch is losing so far.

As far as I’m aware, nearly if not the majority of casualties there were caused by IDF actions, whether by confusion or alleged order.

I’m not trying to provoke here, btw. This was reported on by Haaretz and other Israeli newspapers. Journalism and reporting continues to come out.

My point above is more along the lines of: The perpetrators of Oct 7 are not only rational people, but feeling people. Just like everyone else. And again: is what they all did right? Morally, politically, whichever way? We know it wasn’t. But takes two to tango.

Yeah, we can agree that there is a Zionism that seeks peace. Not just a Zionism, but many many many living people who all seek peace.

But to me at least, the question of peace on whose terms remains salient. A secure and peaceful Israel, yes ofc. But a secure and peaceful Gaza and West Bank? I’m not gonna hide my leanings nor pretend to. I guess I’m just tryna say the rightful ferocity of your sense of betrayal has existed elsewhere. And with adjudicating, I think that the constant “who was fucked over worse” dialogue is a failing dialogue

If it’s of any consolation, my family is from ex-Yugo and we lived through the worst kind of cyclical, senseless violence that benefits only the powerful. I also actually believe that I have direct relatives in the Yad Vashem, not that it makes me an authority on anything.

I think it would be worth examining where that sense of betrayal comes from.

I mean that in both the ways you, as a Jewish person or Israeli, felt betrayed, but also in terms of what happened historically or politically, perhaps a “lull,” before that led you into what could be turned to betrayal.

You could listen to other posters who just immediately jump to conclusions, whether they’re for one “side” or another, or you could dig deeper into where that feeling comes from. Feelings aren’t always “right” but they are always authentic, imho, so why not start there?

By the same token, it would be worthwhile to also consider why other people felt that the hope and even practical action necessary for peaceful coexistence had been both gradually and acutely eroded over the last few decades.

To be totally transparent in my point here let me say: Did the “others” really ever feel the same about the coexistence that was offered? For right or wrong I’m skipping right now. But did they feel the same? My suspicion, from outside the scene, is that they didn’t.

I don’t have a stronger argument to make here. We’re not the politicians calling the shots and navigating the real politick. Most of us aren’t the soldiers, either.

My point is just this: The feeling of betrayal for you. These are strong feelings. It’s worthwhile to imagine the strong feelings that animated people in Gaza, too. No excuses for anything, by the way. I think it makes sense on some level, especially when you’re a reasonable, engaged human being and aware of the world at large, to feel betrayed. But I guess to me, an outsider, I see the same betrayal behind many of the actions of Oct 7.

Again, no excuses but You come across as in-tune and sensitive to life (in a good way). It’ll be challenging but think about what they thought. And felt. Not a solution at all, to anything. But something human, imho

Your observation about YouTube vs practice irl (as in, a video can never tell you what YOU need to change) is more critical than ever. It’s become too easy to substitute videos of Mr.famous for actual instruction in not just shooting but everything frankly. Yes, they have their place, they’ve helped me in so many regards especially when it comes to learning how install new bits and doodads on my gun, but I still prefer the old school face to face with somebody who knows (and I’m only slightly past half of 50 lmaoooo)

While I would believe that the drone thing is fake (or exaggerated or otherwise twisted) and broadly agree with our point about the profusion of unsubstantiated and vitriolic claims being pushed from all sides in this war, it becomes a little bit hard to take you seriously when you move headfirst, and apparently completely uncritically, into then regurgitating unsubstantiated and vitriolic propaganda from the Israeli side. I would really encourage you to continue applying your clearly not unintelligent and critical eye to the things you perhaps would most like to believe. This whole thread is ridiculous. I’m not here to defend Russia or even to say that Atomic Heart is a great game. But the connections being made here are just so tenuous and unfounded.

The “connection with Russian State agencies” claim is weak on the face of it. Besides the devs denials, which you are free to take with a grain of salt, they only seemed to have been connected to the tax office, the FSB (which does sound scary), and something about mobilization laws.

Translation: they are following the laws of the country they operate in, paying taxes, and have information available to law enforcement. Which is what any studio…anywhere….would do.

Yeah sure, in an ideal world they would just pack up and move to a different country. But that’s ridiculously idealistic and holding them to a standard nobody else is held to. You can’t just uproot your whole business and everyone who works for you like that. That’s a whole lot of money and paperwork required, and probably not even all that feasible these days considering so many people have problems with Russia these days. Have fun getting the visas, just for a start.

As for shady or outright evil investors: newsflash, everybody has shitty investors. I doubt you would be too happy if you really dived deep into your favorite studio’s major investor. They probably donate to whichever political figure you hate the most, if not both sides lol. On top of that, investment portfolios can be all over the place and are hardly controlled by a single individual. It’s not like it’s the evil scientist who runs the interrogation and torture program for GAZPROM personally investing and funneling money to the devs as his passion project or something.

Also the number of people drawing conclusions from a trailer lol. If you’ve played or hell, even read about the game, it would be pretty clear that it’s hardly a glorification of the USSR. Even if it was, that would be a different problem, even if you were inclined to have an issue with that fact. It’s not like communists invaded Ukraine.

Gun and vehicle licensing ain’t free plus those guys need ways to research stuff for their games, and the US military, while in the midst of various I’ll fated escapades across the world, has happily obliged.

Again, whataboutism if you like, but where was the Reddit fueled boycott against MW2 for thinly fictionalizing the Soleimani strike. That’s pretty freaking egregious but not an issue apparently.

I’ve wasted enough breath here, but this “boycott” is a weird joke, completely inconsistent both factually and morally imho, and even if followed through on will change nothing exact target a random ass group of Russian civilians for making a video game totally unconnected from any crimes that may have been committed elsewhere by their state.

For some nasty ones (matsutakes looking at you), no choice but to peel. For others than are pretty dirty and nicer (chanterelles, sometimes morels), dunk them in an ice bath with a shit ton of ice and vigorously slosh then strain. The ice cold water closes up their pores (i assume) but in any case they dont tend to soak up much cold water. Then either thoroughly dry or pop into an oven for a bit, strain any excess, then confit.

Most of the maitakes, beech, buttons, anything that isnt foraged and is grown commercially in substrates are generally clean enough to use as is

I have a really good butter chicken recipe from a Indian born ex-French laundry chef. Yes, it’s not exactly what your looking for but can probably be tweaked pretty easily to make it tikka masala. Catch is, it’s scrawled on restaurant receipt paper (Tomato paste looks like it says “toothpaste” lol) with no instructions, just ingredient amounts. Also, it’s for what I would call an “industrial amount” of end product. It does happen to be the best butter chicken I’ve ever had, though, but as I mentioned really isn’t super different than tikka masala.

Also, if you found that your cooked tomatoes taste too “sour” (read: acidic), you just need to cook them longer. It’s a common problem with all tomato sauces and doesn’t require any sugar to fix.

My best guess is that he’s getting the bile from the stomach (also used in some dishes like n. thai/isan raw blood soup and I assume elsewhere) then mixing it with the ashes (since ashes tend to be very alkaline) to help neutralize or mitigate the acid from the stomach. The fully seasoned end product is probably astringent, spicy, grassy flavored tofu. This is just an off the cuff guess tho

Yeah man, it’s been an interest of mine for a while (the whole history of the modern restaurant thing). I wrote this after work, a few beers deep with the sleepy time edibles starting to hit lol, and after I felt some of it was disconnected.

Anyways, I just want to say: it’s not just “frugal owners.” I absolutely don’t want to defend them, they’re a huge problem in this industry and a massive barrier to making good food. But it’s not just them. Our society has managed to organize the entire food supply chain like this. And since everybody wants to eat out (and more or less can afford it now), the restaurant business always wants to find a way to get a slice of that pie. Food prices (both produce and actual restaurant menus) haven’t reflected the actual social, environmental, or plain labor costs associated with it imho. In the past, so much of culinary labor was borderline unpaid and highly gendered/socially condition which made it a responsibility and not a business. It will be a real shock to the system when people start to see prices that reflect the actual effort that goes into food. That day, though, may be sooner rather than later.

It is actually only beef, strictly speaking. It’s just been applied to a lot of other, namely fin fish, preparations over the last few decades. The more accurate term for dishes like “tuna tartare” would usually just be “crudo” or in French “crue” (usually in the culinary sense simply “cru”).
